a few weeks ago, the charging port on my phone stopped working. luckily, i have a phone from a company that has put repairability as a high priority, so i was able to order a new usb board for 10 bucks and install it myself using their tutorial. i feel very accomplished, i have never repaired an electronic like that before. :)

What phone? I’m gonna need to pick a new device up soon, and I’d love something that wasn’t designed by people that hate me

Mine stop working all the time. Turns out I have lots of lint in my pocket.

I changed the screen on my phone by myself once, then a month later I dropped the phone and had to do it again.

have you considered using a dust plug, or one of those magnetic chargers that you keep the charging tab in the socket at all times? i certainly have haha

I did get the magnetic thing, it worked well for a while, but it turns out that some of the lint in my pockets is magnetic. So slowly the magnet got clogged up and wouldn’t connect anymore.

I also scrape the lint out of someone’s charging port every now and then. Good quality of life improvement when the plug snaps in properly again.

Well played! I love repairability, I did my Pixel 6 Pro screen then broke it again and did it again. That would have been 3 phones in a few months but because I replaced the screen myself it only cost around $400 AUD. Repairing things is not only the past but also the future.

      older pixel phones rock.

      unlockable bootloaders, too

which is the other half of repairability- truly owning the device you paid for and having the right to install whatever software on it you like.

pixels are fragile little babies arent they? i got the pixel 3 and it was the worst phone purchase of my life, who thought it was a good idea to make the ENTIRE thing out of glass? long story short, i dropped it ONE time and the front and back were pulverized into dust. went right back to samsung and swore to never get another one.

It’s kinda dumb that most phones aren’t designed to be more durable. You can design the best looking glass and aluminium sandwich there ever was, at the end of the day people will still put a case on it to protect their $2000 device…

devices held together by adhesives was an innovate approach

but also a degenerate one… which has led phones to degenerate into their current state of tricky repairability.

My Oneplus 11 has been through the ringer with no case. Practically thrown it at concrete on more than one occasion. The body is scuffed here or there, but the glass is pristine. Kinda wild to me because I had phone in the early days that broke their glass if you looked at them wrong.

Weirdly enough, I know someone who works in construction and has a OnePlus 11, too; front and back shattered the first time he dropped it on the job.

truly lol. they have a slim version i would like to try. i have the titan pocket but it’s not even close to the current version of android. i think it’s android 11? perfect size for a phone though, imo
