There was a scene in an old movie(Murder, inc, I believe, but could be wrong) where the personage intentionally goes out knowing perfectly well that she is hunted by the mafia. And dies, obviously.

Rather silly! Space stations (and Starfleet) operate around the clock, on shifts. Perhaps the writers were up at 4am trying to finish the script!
