It’s not a privacy based phone. It’s a phone they’re hoping to sell to mass market consumers that so happens to be about to run a privacy based OS.
You are not the target audience and will continue to not be unless people like you become the dominant consumer of such a device. The problem is the people who enjoy this community, by and large, own a pixel 3 and won’t purchase anything unless it’s got every feature they want.
Even more unfortunately is those features only end up on cheap phones because manufacturers correlated them with poor people. Need a headphone jack? Must be too poor to afford Bluetooth headphones. Need an sd card slot? Must be too poor to afford a cloud subscription or bigger phone. Need a removable battery or to repair your device? You obviously can’t afford to buy a new phone every 2 years.
The bottom line is you are all too sensible to spend the money and influence design decisions so this is what you get.

Have you tried a USB C to headphone adapter? They’re quite small and never have to leave your headphones. And you could set the phone on a wireless charger to charge and listen simultaneously. Would that be an option for you?

I assume you mean a 3a, I don’t believe the 3 still had a headphone jack. I held on to my 4a for as long as I could, but after their battery shenanigans it only lasted a few hours is very light use.
A phone repair shop could pop in a new battery. It wouldn’t be secure to use on the internet, but it’d be a good mp3 player :)
Due to not being able to get a graphene compatible phone with a headphone jack, I’ve been just using a DAP for the past year or so. It sucks needing to carry around a second device. If I hadn’t already gone this route it would have been an option and I could have just used a rom that let me switch off the radios.

Much harder to replace the built-in USB-C port and you also lose a lot of other features of the phone (such as… ya know… charging) in the meanwhile.

Um, so FYI there are multiple ways to charge some phones. Some can do wireless charging plus let the usb-c port use a 3.5mm adapter for a headset. Its a pretty decent solution.

How often you needed to replace 3.5mm female socket? I don’t think I ever encountered that (if there were issues it was always with the cable), but had to replace USB female socket several times.

Interesting, experience was that those were quite durable: 3 connections and then the port soldered into the board.
Any issues I seen were with the headphone cable and the jack.
I had a lot of issues with USB especially micro USB that just worn down after use even when your were careful. And because it is using digital protocol I had to remove and insert jack again until it clicks.
I have this problem with USB C on my work’s Mac.

The charging port doesn’t break from plugging in the cable, it happens because the headphone cable gets pulled at angles and usb-c isn’t good at handling the stress from. I’ve literally had this happen. And yes, Apple’s dongle IS one of the best usb-c dongles. They have always sold it dirt cheap as a way to assuage the people that were angry at the headphone jack removal. I am surprised they haven’t raised the price after all these years; it has to be sold at a loss at this point.
I’m still, after several years, confused on why didn’t they make the USB-C connector circular. Wouldn’t have to deal with the whole “spin 1/2” issue USB has had for decades, and there wouldn’t be a “weird angle” for the cable to be pulled at, all angles would be equal.

I haven’t had it happen to a phone in a long time (though it did happen to the LG phone I had like two phones ago).
I’ve had it happen to another device that charges with USB-C (Focus V Carta 2). To the point where I had to buy a wireless charger (that itself needs to charge with USB-C so I have to make sure not to do it again) built specifically for the device and it’s the only way I can charge the device now.
Amazing device though. I’ve had it for like 6 years now and that’s the only part that stopped working. I haven’t inhaled combusted plant matter since.
Im sure the device is end of life after 6 years anyways, so that sounds about right. I personally havent ever had a usb-c port fail, but ive only been using iphones and pixels. Good workaround with the wireless charging though.

The iPhone is a better device for you. You’ll never be able to get the most out of a graphene phone.
If Graphene would run on the iPhone it would be my first choice. But my privacy is more important than sexy hardware. It would have the added benefit of blending in, law enforcement is already targeting Pixel phones. That wouldn’t be practical with iPhone.

90W charging, huge storage option, high quality cameras (I already have a billion lenses on the back of my phone so I just don’t give a shit), great screen - yeah I don’t care how the thing looks. I care about GrapheneOS support and that it has the hardware to keep it usable for more than a couple of years.
Right now its between this and a flip phone + umpc for me. We’ll see where things go in the coming months.
Not me - I’m on Graphene but one of the biggest things I love about the software itself is that it’s very well designed, which is rare to see in the FOSS / privacy community. I hate shitty UIs and shitty design in general.

I miss the days of a single camera lens. I wouldn’t even mind a system where you can swap the lens for different needs, but having a “camera bump” on a phone is so annoying. I prefer not needing a case to make the back of my phone lay flat on a table.
at least this one is now horizontal. so if the individual lens does not protrude too much away from the island, like the iphone 17/18 do, it shouldn’t rock when it’s on a flat surface.
despite the stupid trend of putting massive islands o. the back of the phone, when well designed it acts as a finger cliff to balance on my hand.
I hand a large hand so mileage will vary as always.
Personally, I think it’s better than the Samsung Galaxy Ultra series because, on those phones, the camera island goes down the phone, not across it, making magnetic accessories cumbersome to fit on at times.
The Motorola also looks like it doesn’t have a camera island, just protruding cameras. I can’t be sure though.

Expandable storage is for photos, videos, music, books, etc… not for “important data.” Pixels made their storage tiny specifically to push users to use Google Drive, Google Photos (pushing the “clean your device” store everything in the cloud BS), YouTube Music, etc…
A vast majority of people also use their phone as an MP3 player and camera and apps, not just a chat device. My music library is not crazy and would not fit on a pixel together with my photos/videos, for example.

That hasn’t been my experience in the past with android at all. I have missed having that extra storage the past few years of owning a pixel. That said I made my choice to buy a pixel for graphene and I stand by that choice.

it truly, seriously is. I bit the bullet and got Google’s camera app which sadly works much better. I just block it from having any network permissions but even then it feels really sketchy. but I’m not going back to the GrapheneOS camera, it’s just so fucking miserable.
There are other options and also a neutered pixel camera somewhere but I cant find it again unfortunately.
The contactless payments would be a huge step. If Linux phones could get the actual phone functionality working on most models, that would be nice too. I desperately want what we were promised with Ubuntu Phone like 15 years ago. A functional phone with convergence would be fantastic.

The only thing I’m aware of in years of using it are Apps requiring full Play Integrity, because Google quite deliberate chooses not to allow this for GrapheneOS, despite all requirements being met. I’m not convinced they’ll make an exception for a competitor’s phone running the same.

for me personally, repairability is a negative on portable computers.
the reasons are security, size, cost, regular lifetime. these are all negatively correlated to repairability. if you can screw your device open, that means that so can an attacker. it makes the phone bulkier and less efficient IMO if they have to keep in mind that every connector on the inside has to be standards-compatible.
my daily driver is a 2013 lg g2. it’s compact than most (any?) other phones on the current market, it can be opened and repaired with a single philips head screw driver…
Do you think an attacker that would physically access your phone to physically probe internal debug pads would not own a heat gun or care if the screen gets damaged during disassembly? 😂 it is quite trivial to open.
They aren’t giving the phone back. If it is such a targeted attack that the attacker is willing to open the phone at all, they will just fully disassemble it, it doesn’t matter if it is repairable or not
It is bulkier, true, and harder to waterproof, but those are essentially the only 2 downsides.
Security shouldn’t even be a consideration unless you are in the 0.00000001% of people doing professional spy or espionage work (or a target of them) that someone would be willing to go through the very elaborate operation of disassembling a phone to exploit firmware bugs to insert malware in order to put it back together into a compromised surveillance device and then slip it back into a location where you would just think you forgot to take it. In that case you should be using burner phones anyways, provided by the employer with a security team behind them.
My major issues with it is that it’s the first phone to officially support Graphene, so you’d think it would cater to a different demographic.
Yet there’s no headphone jack, no SD card support. And it’s WAY too big. It’s just another boring modern phone that is selling itself on being unnecessarily powerful.
