The beet crop is growing nicely. But we remain vigilant against the deer. Despite their best efforts, the string beans are holding their front. And have been reported as growing back. I have 7 nice peppers and some tiny tomatoes are appearing.
There has been ongoing discussions about investing in a paintball gun to repel the bandits. Scouting, has reported that 2 fawns have been sighted and added to the gang. But no firm consensus been reached or decision made by upper management. We may need to wait for the inevitable assault on the flowers. By then I fear it will be too late.

This could be an old wives tale, anecdotal evidence, or some combination there of… but my grandfather always told me to go out and urinate around the perimeter of the garden. Pick a different spot every night, starting with the heavily traveled areas and then branch out.
I’ve seen deer standing at the perimeter, but never past, and I’ve never lost a plant to deer.

That… or deer are prey species and any scent of humans sends them into a panic…but I like yours better lol means when I scare them off hunting it’s my “dominant presence” and not that I smell bad lol
Some days I want to mark my territory with my 8mm Mauser. (Don’t worry I don’t do those kinds of things) But the thought does cross my mind when I see my “farm” eaten by those godless heathens.
I have 3 dogs, (2 males), that lift their legs on the raise beds every day. It kind of works, but the deer also know they aren’t much of threat either since I have them trained to not ever chase a deer.
Looking good! I had a small test harvest a couple weeks ago. Decided to let the rest go longer. Did some rescue harvesting yesterday due to flooding. Lost 2 to ants but none to rot, thankfully.
Ain’t nowhere near harvesting anything yet. But that’s life up Norf where we often get killing frosts into early June. We’ve had pretty consistent rains through June, but we are still in a drought condition here. But we haven’t had any fire danger warns for a while either, occupational fun living in the middle of a forest.
We’ve had a relatively cool start to summer here that seems to have stunted some growth (and my planting), but I did harvest the first radish today 🙂
It’s been very cool here also. We had a couple of nights with killing frost into the second week of June this year. We need some heat units to things to grow!
