Not sure what you mean, you can still easily do that. It’s just different steps. If you upgrade phones every few years, it’s really like an extra 5 minutes to the process. Also this makes it harder to do sim swap attacks.

Being able to get an app from the app store and activate a service from it in a few minutes, no need to wait for a physical card to ship.
