Interesting - I’m surprised to hear so many don’t experience this. I’ve used Steam chat on Arch and EndeavourOS for years, and I’ve always found the desktop client to feel a little sluggish, with menus and emoji pickers being particularly finicky. I wonder if it’s related to certain desktop environments or specific setups?
Good call. I use it sometimes, but I find it has its own quirks: GIFs always fail to play for me.

I’m so new to the game (and genre) but it’s been so much fun and it works on the Steam Deck!
I’m still working things out but you drop into a map with others and it’s you VS ARC robots but also VS other players. So far I’ve only been killed once or twice and most people seem quite friendly and helpful.
The only way you can leave are through the same exits as everyone else… so your heart gets PUMPING.

Your anger is about wealth inequality and the ethics of extreme capitalism, which is a totally valid topic. But you’re using that anger to answer a different question: ‘What is a fair price for this service?’
But you are insisting on using that separate topic as the only metric for this one. Since we’re fundamentally talking about two different issues and you’re refusing to engage with the point about service value, I don’t see this conversation being productive any longer.

Factually speaking: Valve provides a massive, global storefront, handles all payment fraud and chargebacks, provides cloud storage for games, and maintains the entire friend/community network. The 30% is the price for that bundle of services.

Get a Steam Deck. Looks like Flightgear will run on them and you can use them as a portable PC when using it with a docking station.
I’m not saying this is the best choice but I went from a gaming PC to a laptop/Steam Deck and haven’t touched the PC since. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Yup, that’s essentially been my experience with Steam and chat as well, though it sounds like you might be having an even rougher time than I am. I’m on LXQT, but it’s the only app I’ve used that consistently acts this poorly across different installs and distributions. I’d always assumed it was just a universal “Steam-on-Linux” quirk, but it’s interesting to hear it’s not quite the same for everyone.
