Yeah, that is a pretty realistic assessment, and the author should definitely try out Snikket (XMPP). There are also somewhat decent bridges for xmpp via https://slidge.im/

You could enable Suricata on OPNsense, which will allow you to subscribe to some known attacker lists and so one. But the problem these days are mostly AI scrapers that usually don’t show up on these lists as they are not attackers per se, but just cause a lot of database load by repeatably probing every part of your web-applications.

On the Linus Tech Tips video they revealed that it is using the open-source FEX x86 emu (which development supported by Valve).

Played around a bit with hosting Flohmarkt and Manyfold. Promising fediverse projects, but still a bit early days.

Also looked a bit into running Piefed via Podman, but didn’t progress much with it. Looks easy enough though in general.

The main annoyance I had when setting it up was that you have to set an ENV variable for the timezone, otherwise the map for the location choser during the initial instance setup doesn’t show up thus making it impossible to proceed.

I guess this is probably an unintended bug and I should make an issue on their Codeberg about that sometimes.

It is pretty early in development, but is quite nice already. I set up a test instance a few weeks ago and are quite happy with it so far.

If you use btrfs (nice for simple ad-hoc raid1 setups) then https://github.com/digint/btrbk is a very nice tool to automate snapshots and backups over ssh.

You can also improvise a setup with an external usb drive that you only connect once a week or so to do longer term backups. This isn’t exactly an off-site backup but somewhat similar if you store that drive away from the servers.

Snikket isn’t really meant to be customized with other components right now, but it is possible to get Biboumi working with it.

Most people use Biboumi as a bouncer for external IRC networks, but of course it also works with a self-hosted IRC server.

Hmm, you might be on to something with Framework recently releasing a desktop PC. Maybe they decided to cooperate with Valve for a home console. Valve seems to be quite into repairability as well, so that doesn’t seem like a totally unlikely match.
