Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Linux user share on Steam ended 2024 on a high noteEnglish
12·1 year agoI’m one. As a Mac user, I haven’t used windows in years, and avoid it like the plague. But, the limited games support meant I had to rely on consoles to get my gaming fix. With Steam’s strong support for Linux, I decided to build a gaming PC for Linux only. It’s been great. I just wish more publishers would support it — the ones adding kernel-level anti-cheat are ruining things, but I’m hoping if enough people switch to Linux, they won’t be able to ignore us.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL the New York Post was purchased by Rupert Murdoch in 1976 and then lost money every year until September 2022 when it became profitable, posting a profit for the quarter and year to date.English
781·1 year agoBasically, the point is, Rupert Murdoch is no business man. He is pushing an agenda.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Excuse the old man question, but if I buy an iPhone 16 Pro Max outright, with no carrier. I can set it up with my current carrier easily?
10·1 year agoYeah, should tell you it’s unlocked at checkout. Just don’t select a provider. Then, contact yours and ask for instructions to set it up.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the worst present you've ever received?
495·1 year agoGod parents are supposed to care for the children, if the parents die. I think you shouldn’t overthink it. If you’re willing to fill that role, then raise the kids however you think is best. Accept the role gracefully as it is an honor and your sister is showing she loves and trusts you. Leave it at that.
As atheists, we have to acknowledge that most of the world isn’t yet on our level of thinking, but also that we don’t really have similar “concepts” for religious traditions that serve certain societal needs. God parents do serve a societal function. As an atheist, I can acknowledge that, accept that role, and play the part for those I love.
I left around 2017 when it was clear that it was ruining family relationships through propaganda from Cambridge Analytica and manipulation from Russia over the election.
This was after years of being annoyed at the changes to the platform, which ignored privacy and were user hostile.
By the time I left I had removed the app from my phone years earlier and had an arms length relationship to it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Should one give money directly to homeless people?
62·1 year agoOnce I saw a homeless guy begging outside of a sandwich shop, I was going in to buy lunch, so I ordered two sandwiches instead of one. I came out and offered the extra to him. He scoffed at me and refused it. So, I had a sandwich for lunch and I had a sandwich for dinner, and both were delicious.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Linux gaming isn't looking too good, but there's still hope!English
1·1 year agoNo, I haven’t tried, but looked it up and see it doesn’t work.
You gotta figure it out. Go find a company that appeals to you and order a sampler pack. Try the samples one day at a time until you find the one that is you. I like this approach better than going to some store counter because you can take your time. After smelling one or two colognes, it’s very hard to be able to appreciate others, so ordering the sampler packs gives you time to decide.
Few of my colleagues like Alexandria Fragrances. I’ve had luck with Guy Fox. Both have sampler packs. It’s literally a rabbit hole of choices. One of my colleagues spends thousands of dollars on rare perfumes.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do People Choose BlueSky Over Mastodon?
211·1 year agoI think the problem is Mastodon makes it hard to find people to follow. I can’t even find mainstream media official accounts, let alone an actual celebrity. The discovery features need to be improved.
Meanwhile on BlueSky I instantly see every major news outlet in my main feed.
