Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that Toys R Us wasn't killed by competition, but by private equity companiesEnglish
3·3 months agoIt’s still kind of a thing in the USA, you just have to visit a Macy’s department store at the local dying mall. The Toys R Us is a small section in the back.
Which is far more depressing than if the brand was outright dead.
Illinois would like to join your federation.

1·11 months agoA set of torx screwdrivers and an exacto knife will take care of that. Pretty hard for a cellular modem to transmit data when the traces to the antenna are cut.

In a world entirely populated by empathetic, decent, and sane people we wouldn’t need much privacy. Unfortunately that’s not the world we live in. There are countless unstable, stupid, and evil people in the world – some of them are in positions of power or might achieve power in the future. They are absolutely the sort to weaponize “harmless” information against you.
Do you want those people to know your sexual preferences, political leanings, etc?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are the "AK-47" of items? (cheap, durable, just works)
1·1 year agoThat’s what I’m running, though I had issues with it randomly requiring a reset. Installing OpenWrt fixed that problem.
Option 3. Get a job as part of the 5% of the population still employed in serving the various security apparatuses protecting the rich fucks – you could be a soldier, cop, or government official.
Better to be part of the boot than be the poor fuckers getting stepped on, right? You can sleep easily knowing you have it slightly better than the other 95% of the underclass.

Again, we’re talking about actual children. You know: people that have yet to mentally develop to the point where they can make fully informed decisions on everything and sometimes have to be “coerced” by reasonable adults into doing so.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Company creates "solution" to address school "vaping incidents".
52·1 year agoThere’s this wild, outlandish idea that kids don’t have the maturity, experience, or impulse control to make informed and rational decisions all the time. Thus we don’t give kids the exact same rights and responsibilities we give to adults – they gradually gain them as they mature and demonstrate they can handle them.
How would you like this installed in your workplace?
Yes, because my workplace staffed entirely by people 21+ is the same thing as a school filled with literal children. Also, for some unknowable reason we don’t have issues with people vaping in the building despite having people that smoke and vape. Couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the fact none of us are teenagers.
What if [slippery slope]?
You do know that’s a fallacy, right?

163·1 year ago… good?
Everyone (even kids) have a reasonable expectation of privacy, but children using drugs in school isn’t something that falls under that reasonable expectation of privacy.

They’re fine giving you their info because they trust you. The problem is when the person seeking that information is untrustworthy – and some shithead(s) making their way into a company or government isn’t just possible, it’s likely.
Tell them to give all their sensitive personal information to someone that hates them. Credit card numbers, political beliefs, nudes, sexual preferences/fetishes, etc.
