Critics argue that those pushing for reforms “hate people who own cars,” in the words of Vickie Paladino, a City Council member who represents a district in Queens that is home to many car owners.
I don’t hate people who own cars but I do hate cars. They pollute. They take up valuable space. They’re bad for the economy. They kill people.
In 1996, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani moved the city’s traffic enforcement agents, the unarmed civilians who write tickets for parking and other traffic violations, from the Transportation Department to the Police Department.
Fuck Giuliani
The other day I saw a car double parked in Brooklyn. The owner was sitting at a sidewalk table drinking coffee from the coffee shop that’s there. A cop walked up and started to write a ticket, and the lady ran up to try to get out of it.
On the one hand, fuck the police. On the other, fuck that lady for double parking so she could just chill out for a while. One of the most walkable neighborhoods, and there’s a stupid amount of free, available, parking around there.

I would rather use that space for homes for people than cars.

I mostly buy music from bandcamp. Drm free, different format options, you can stream before you buy (if the band has it configured as such)

Ah that’s interesting. I’m too much of a pack rat and the idea of selling some of my music makes me uncomfortable. Though I guess I have some games that were duds I wouldn’t mind selling.

buying drm-free digital media is probably also okay, if you back it up yourself.
i don’t do any subscriptions, myself.

Have you considered a book club? Locally or on Lemmy. That might be nice, though I’m not sure how to level it up from “we’re reading this” to include “and we did some critical analysis”. Also online is more vulnerable to slop, even though I don’t understand why someone would use AI to think for them in an exercise that’s entirely about thinking.
A friend of mine had a book club and was reading a book a month, but then the ring leader had a kid and it’s on hiatus.

In a 2019 interview, Goodman responded to criticisms of three cueing, saying that “word recognition is a preoccupation” and emphasizing that he places greater value on making sense of language as a whole than understanding specific words. In response to the example of children failing to distinguish between “pony” and “horse”, Goodman argued that it was irrelevant whether children understood the specific word, as “pony” and “horse” are similar concepts, and a reader failing to distinguish between them would still understand the meaning of the story as a whole.
Absolute nightmare

Some sort of online community for people to practice reading, especially critically so they practice skills like recognizing subtext, irony, themes, etc, could probably be cool
Unfortunately, the people on a text based platform like Lemmy probably have better than average reading skills. The people who need more help probably stick to video.
Also there’s a surprising amount of anti-intellectualism, sometimes, where people say things like “it’s just a story it doesn’t have any deeper meaning!”. Fundamental misunderstanding of how meaning works. (You don’t find the correct answer. You make up an answer and justify it with the text.)

People think “violence is never the answer” even when violence is being done to them. People are stupid.
I like to think in the future maga-hats will be fodder enemies in video games like Nazis. You can just kill them without remorse because they are scum.

They’re doing this instead of just making regular search decent.
I just want to see jobs that use python. Stop showing me C#.
Microsoft should be split up

Yep. Place I’m at is in some sort of “hiring freeze”. They’re not replacing people who left. They also told the many (probably not strictly legal) contractors that they won’t be renewing them. It’s absurd.
I want to say that everyone hates that kind of purple job prose, but I suspect there’s some small minority of people who actually think and talk like that.
I kind of want to build a LinkedIn but you’re only allowed to talk like a real person. If you post slop or whatever that kind of shit is, you’re banned and we all pledge not to work with you.

I only saw them once, so my memory might be foggy. I remember thinking Force Awakens was pretty okay. The Last Jedi was pretty okay. Rise of skywalker was a steaming pile of shit.
There was a build-up towards “it doesn’t matter who your parents are - anybody can be important” that got completely reversed in the last film.
It would take an incomprehensible set of changes for me to consider going back to Microsoft. They can fuck off.
It wasn’t working at first but now it is!

Reminded of that quote
Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’
People need to admit they don’t know shit and stop believing crap from YouTube.

Do the other ones have forums? I don’t remember even seeing them.
Is the steam forum supposed to be moderated by valve or the developer? I always assumed the developer.

The other contenders mostly are bad.
Drm-free still exists.
They provide a lot of value without charging the end user very much.
Microsoft could have done this except they’re run by idiots and assholes. Nothing technical stopped them from launching a good store platform. They just didn’t want to.
Some people will do anything to continue to fit in with their group. I don’t think it’s always even a conscious choice.
