Microsoft is unbothered by all of this because the Xbox project was always an effort to PC-ify the console market. They just assumed they’d own PC gaming. Aside from that little hiccup, it’s gone swimmingly.

Side note, but it always baffled me why Microsoft went into consoles. They owned windows, where everyone was playing PC games on. They could’ve made something like Steam, if you ignore that large companies like Microsoft seem incapable of delivering good products. Don’t even both with the hardware expenses.

I read about that. I can only assume there’s some soulless goons in the middle who gets a bonus from some poorly thought about metric, and they’re going to chase that even if everyone else suffers.

I feel like larger orgs have too many incompetent idiots and useless layers of management to appropriately manage people. So you have people extruding AI slop because that’s optimal for getting some fucking ghoul middle manager to see you. The guy who fixes bugs and writes useful tests isn’t going to impress fucking Joanne who can’t even code but somehow is still in charge of the department.

I think this is a big problem at Google. You get rewarded for shipping something, even if that means killing a better product.

Other than that, yeah I guess it’s a social game. Getting people to like you matters more than you might think it should.

Sure, but there has to be some agency on the part of people. Like, yes they’re victims of propaganda and such, but I don’t want a model where everyone is acted upon and never acts. My wealthy coworkers who just don’t read books are who I’m thinking of. They have ample time and resources to learn more, but it’s easier to just watch anime and play dota.

If you don’t expect them to ever act, then nothing will change and we’ll just be crushed by capitalism and friends forever.

And by act I don’t even mean like go start a revolution, or a mutual aid group, or do anything dramatic. Just spend 20 minutes reading about history. Be curious. Overcome the quagmire of propaganda we’re immersed in. Just for a little bit.

Most people don’t know any history of labor. I barely know anything and I’m interested in the topic. It’s frustrating. I mean, I can accept the ingnorance. That’s natural. But the lack of curiosity is upsetting.

Now, now. The people who would suffer from that kind of violence will be quick to tell you violence is never the answer. You have to move through the systems they built.

Corporate abuse of language is frustrating. I’ve worked with a lot of product manager types that really want to use extra words. “Let’s just swag it”. “We need to force rank these initiatives”. “Can you do a research spike this sprint?”

Maybe I can work this fact in the next time I’m going on about how cars are bad for us
