usr does mean user. It was the place for user managed stuff originally. The home directory used to be a sub directory of the usr directory.
The meaning and purpose of unix directories has very organically evolved. Heck, it’s still evolving. For example, the new .config directory in the home directory.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Those without A/C, what are your tips to stay cool during the summer?
14·1 year ago2 tips.

Negative air pressure is your friend. If you open the windows upstairs and down and blow air out of the house it’ll suck air from the downstairs to the upstairs cooling the entire house.
-
Bernoulli’s principle is your friend. Rather than having fans right next to the windows you’ll move more air if you back the fans a meter or so from the window. https://youtu.be/BhWhTbins_A?si=9LGd0_EmfPFBNnDJ

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's your secret ingredient that makes your version of a common dish better than anyone else's?
1·2 years agoYes and no.
Some salts are easier to work with than others. Kosher salt, in particular, is fairly hard to over season with because you can visually see just how much you’ve thrown onto a steak or such. Fine salt, on the other hand, is a lot easier to over season with.
But then it also depends a lot on the dish. Sauces are really hard to over season. The sea of fluid can absorb a fair amount of salt before it’s noticeable. Meats are similar. A steak can have a snow covering of kosher salt and it won’t really taste super salty.
Bread, on the other hand, will be noticeably worse if you throw in a tbs of salt instead a tsp.
But salt wasn’t specifically what I was thinking when I wrote that. Herbal seasoning garlic, rosemary, thyme, sage, etc, generally won’t overpower a dish if you have too much of them. Especially if you aren’t working with the powdered form. (Definitely possible to over season something with garlic salt/powder).

2·2 years agoI’m pretty much the same way, though I do throw in a bit of fine salt on occasion for the iodine content. I don’t eat a ton of seafood which makes getting the rda of iodine difficult.

14·2 years agoSalt :D
Lots of home cooks are shy with seasoning in general (but especially salt). While not impossible, it’s fairly hard to over season stuff.
That’s why if you ever look at “miracle season alls” the first ingredients are usually something like “Salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder”.
If you want to be amused, look at these ingredients lists. Often the only difference is what food coloring is used.
For example.

K. I mean, you are correct. I did let the recent trainwrecks from the studio stop me from watching another production from that studio. Are you saying that was wrong of me to do?

41·2 years agoI’m using the term “dick jokes” more to describe the style of humor and less about a specific joke about penises (though, pretty sure there’s at least one in there). That is to say, the humor, particularly in season 1, is often crude.
That said, they have relied a lot less on crude humor in later seasons and oddly enough are far more serious than you’d expect from the first season at this point.

53·2 years agoI’ve not watched SNW and perhaps dropped out of discovery too soon. S1, 2, and what I saw of 3 wasn’t my favorite.
I mean, I gotta be honest, Picard somewhat ruined discovery for me. I get that they aren’t the same show but they very much have a lot of the same feels going on.

113·2 years agoTo each their own. VOY had good actors with a few good moments. It was, however, packed with “bad guy of the week” episodes that didn’t really have any plot other than “how will the crew escape the Borg this time?”
Which is why I say it’s forgettable. So many VOY episodes blend together with similar plots and outcomes.

142·2 years agoThe sci-fi is secondary. What we want, what we crave is character development and smart social commentary wrapped up in a sci-fi package.
TNG was great because it was mostly just commentary on society. DS9 was awesome because it was that with character development and with less rose tinted glasses.
VOY was mostly forgettable because it was just sci-fi plotlines with no real social commentary (other than Berman likes big boobs).
Now what we have is moody lighting, no plot, and what would have been an episode’s worth of social commentary stretched out for an entire season with banal messages like “different people aren’t necessarily bad”.

376·2 years agoIt’s sad to me that the dick jokes cartoon has been the closest modern trek to nail the feeling of older trek.
Paramount seems to think moody lighting, pointless drama, and special effects is all trekkies want.
Yup, similar to the square root of two and Euler’s number.
These are numbers defined by their properties and not their exact values. In fact, we have imaginary numbers that don’t have values and yet are still extremely useful because of their defined properties.

27·2 years agoThe sun is based on physics and observing nebula and super novas. We know how much the sun weighs based on it’s gravitational pull. We know what it’s currently burning given the frequency of the light it emits. We know what generation it is based on the elements in the planets. And we know the contents of other stars by the light they emit when they explode and collapse.
We know the layers of the earth because we can bounce sounds off the earth’s core to see how deep it is. We know roughly what it’s made of because we know how much the earth weighs and that the earth has a magnetosphere (you only get that with certain metals).
The methods used are generations of built up knowledge in physics and astrophysics.
You can, of course, just google these questions and get better answers than my summation

3·2 years agoEh, don’t really disagree with what you are saying. The problem is money and industry influence in politics and it’s something that needs to be eliminated. I don’t quiet take your point that regulations don’t matter. Assuming money and industry influence are removed from politics we’d see laws and regulations more line with the public interest over corporate interest.
Even if we fully ditched capitalism, you’d still need/want regulations setting the bounds on how government can/should operate.

Exactly.
