Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Why the Left needs to watch Star Trek: It has lessons for today's techno-optimistsEnglish
7·11 months agoI think about this exact topic a lot and I think you are mostly right, but I also think that open source replicators would be an agent of change, especially if one could be used to manufacture parts to make another. Of course, without land to make things on conflicts will arise. But once the need for money is removed some people will choose to “opt out” of society and start building a parallel one similar to how the open source community exists alongside closed source software.

Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•Just tried Immich to replace Google photos
5·1 year agoI use SyncThing to monitor and copy my photos to an (encrypted, offsite) drive.
I’ve actually checked that out and it’s well made but way more than just a subscription tool, it’s more for downloading/preserving entire channels.
I’ve seen that but either I’m an idiot or that is a CLI tool. What makes Sonarr nice is that it’s config is all done through a web browser meaning you don’t need to edit config files anytime you want to change something.
Thank you for sharing though I may try and get it set up one day
I wish there was a YouTube equivalent of Sonarr that just uses yt-dl to auto-grab and organize YT channels you want as new episodes come out. Then you could just play with Plex or Jellyfin.

2·1 year agoIt is, but diplomacy refers to disputes between peoples. Politics refers to disputes within a people.

51·1 year agoI didn’t say anything about pacifism, but I also disagree with your proposition equating violence and politics. Violence is a breakdown of politics. Politics, almost definitionally, is how a people settle disputes without violence.
Politics is how how decisions are made in groups. If one person or group is forcing their will upon others, then no decision or compromise between the parties can be said to have been made freely. And therefore it cannot be truthfully described as following a political process.

156·1 year agoThat is a very machivellian attitude. I don’t believe that hurting people who aren’t a threat in the name of “progress” is justified, even if it were somehow a shortcut to utopia, which it’s not.
I don’t know why nobody has mentioned Anytype, which is excellent and just recently added collaboration.
I would love a radarr/sonarr style app but for YouTube with sponsorblock built in.
edit: sorry I missed where you said desktop app

4·2 years agoThese threads/articles always get the facts wrong, TikTok is not “getting banned”, they are just forcing the company to divest from it’s Chinese parent company.

3·2 years agoIf you think Taiwan and Ukraine are “other countries’ wars” I have bad news for you. It’s better to pay as much money as we can now before the payment is made with american lives.
Israel is something else obviously, as was US involvement Iraq and Afghanistan. But the bulk of the money is absolutely worth spending if you value your freedom. It has nothing to do with the housing crisis whatsoever. The US has enough money for both.

“Money as a vestigial cultural relic” is a great concept. You’re right, Latinum doesn’t provide the Ferengi with anything but status.
