It typically is pasteurized if it comes from a woman other than the baby’s own mother. If it is donated milk, for example.

Android@lemdro.id•Poll: Which abandoned Android phone features do you miss the most?English
19·4 months agoI don’t remember which phone, but one of mine had an rgb led that could be set to blink different colors for different apps. I really miss that!
If these aren’t microplastics, what are?
“Micro” just means “small” in this case and doesn’t mean “microscopic” or have anything to do with “micrometer”.
The definition of “microplastic” according to NOAA: “Microplastics are small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long”.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL Ancient Persians built Yakhchāls, innovative ice storage structures dating back to 400 BC. These dome-shaped coolers used evaporative cooling to keep ice frozen even during hot summers.English
0·7 months agoWhat’s stopping us from using similar techniques in hot climates now? Why aren’t we building similar structures as homes in Phoenix instead of the standard suburban homes?

1·7 months agoThey do appear to call him “The Eye of Sauron” so, maybe the person writing this wasn’t really interested in making him look good and phoned it in.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL: In 2004, a meme map was created that satirizes the red/blue states scheme by dividing the United States and Canada into "The United States of Canada" and "Jesusland."English
27·9 months agoAs a Coloradan, I agree. Also, New Mexico and Virginia. Probably should also leave PA to Jesus Land.
This actually gives me anxiety. I imagine getting stuck that way.
It’s the feel-good story that Republicans talk about when they say “pull yourself up by your bootstrap” but they’re upset because that’s only supposed to work for white men.

Ohio@midwest.social•Ohio Sheriff Says Immigration Visas Too Confusing For Cops; Asks Trump, Musk To Change Them.
2·11 months agoThey don’t, though. Not for all valid immigration statuses. For example, while a friend of mine was here on a student visa, they simply had their visa, their drivers license (which not everyone would have), and their foreign passport.
I’d say it would actually be a fantastic idea to have some kind of immigration identification card for people who are here legally but are not peanent residents. Something simple that dumb law enforcement officers can accept as firm proof of legal status.
I actually don’t think this sheriff is wrong when he says we need a simpler method of identifying whether someone is legally here. I likely disagree with him in everything else but I agree with him on this.

201·11 months agoAs an academic, if I could make $1M/year by showing my body on OF, I would quit my job in a heartbeat. I would make my money while I can and reassess when no one is interested anymore.
Once I’d made my money, maybe I could use my academic expertise to effect some real change in the world. I’d certainly be more capable of making an impact if I were independently wealthy.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What pieces of software can you recommend that's free, efficient and does not bullshit around?
1·1 year agoDo you have recommendations for tutorials on this?
For raster imagery (and probably vector) I recommend imagemagick.
If you read the article, they are suggesting a different approach to peer review, not doing away with it. They want to find ways to build in incentives for reviewers to make it worth their while to review rather than allowing it to continue as something that scientists do out of a sense of obligation.
They have an interesting approach but I think it doesn’t go far enough.

How about we steer toward better data privacy in general? Cars are collecting way too much data about us? So is everything else! We need sweeping legislation to claw back our privacy. We need a constitutional amendment guaranteeing a right to privacy.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about the 2018 Samsung fat-finger error, in which an employee of Samsung Securities mistakenly distributed shares worth US$100 billion to employees.English
3·1 year agoI don’t know Korea’s laws but this would likely be illegal in the US, too. It depends on whether it could be proven that you knew that the stocks were issued in error. And even if it wasn’t a criminal act, the company would be within their rights to recover the mistakenly issued stocks.

Okay, I have a question. I would love to write my papers in latex, but none of my colleges use it. Is there a way to reasonably collaborate with coauthors who only use Word and for whom Latex would be confusing and difficult?
