    Two questions:

    1. Why would we think otherwise considering that everything in the universe seems to rotate from galactic clusters to galaxies to black holes to stars to planets to the brains of physicists trying to reconcile relativity and quantum?
    2. Does the math actually work out? If so, is there a known constant for the angular momentum of the universe that would explain what we’re seeing?

If these aren’t microplastics, what are?

“Micro” just means “small” in this case and doesn’t mean “microscopic” or have anything to do with “micrometer”.

The definition of “microplastic” according to NOAA: “Microplastics are small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long”.

  • They don’t, though. Not for all valid immigration statuses. For example, while a friend of mine was here on a student visa, they simply had their visa, their drivers license (which not everyone would have), and their foreign passport.

I’d say it would actually be a fantastic idea to have some kind of immigration identification card for people who are here legally but are not peanent residents. Something simple that dumb law enforcement officers can accept as firm proof of legal status.

I actually don’t think this sheriff is wrong when he says we need a simpler method of identifying whether someone is legally here. I likely disagree with him in everything else but I agree with him on this.

As an academic, if I could make $1M/year by showing my body on OF, I would quit my job in a heartbeat. I would make my money while I can and reassess when no one is interested anymore.

Once I’d made my money, maybe I could use my academic expertise to effect some real change in the world. I’d certainly be more capable of making an impact if I were independently wealthy.

  • If you read the article, they are suggesting a different approach to peer review, not doing away with it. They want to find ways to build in incentives for reviewers to make it worth their while to review rather than allowing it to continue as something that scientists do out of a sense of obligation.

They have an interesting approach but I think it doesn’t go far enough.
