I was a kid when ENT was airing, I wasn’t able to watch it consistently, but it was my first brush with Star Trek and I remembered how hopeful the song made me feel for the future. I can admit it is corny, but I was a kid and I didn’t know much English at the time so I didn’t get the religious undertones and to this day hearing it makes me incredibly nostalgic. I long for that feeling of hopefulness now and I’m thankful I get to experience at least a little bit of it when watching that intro.

No, we are not over capacity for survival. We waste a ton of water on stuff we don’t need, like having lawns in the desert or choosing to grow almonds during droughts when people have to ration water usage at home. . Top soil is the same, we could, collectively, switch from beef and to a lesser extent pork to focus on much more efficient chicken, thus freeing a lot of land used to feed livestock.

Stop this Malthusian nonsense, we have enough resources for everyone. They are just severely mismanaged to the point of killing us all. We could live sustainably if we wanted to, we just choose not to.

Yup, there’s plenty of time to have fun if you don’t have to manage lil’ ones. Not saying people who want kids shouldn’t get them, but moreso that people who don’t necessarily want them and just see it as something people have to do should consider a childless lifestyle. It’s better for everyone that way.

Can someone explain to me in layman’s terms why this is the most efficient way?

Imagine this (not so) hypothetical scenario:

Yellowstone or another supervolcano erupts and leads to a few years of volcanic winter, where there is much less sunshine. This has historical precedent, it has happened before, and while in and of itself it will impact a lot of people regardless of anything else, wouldn’t you agree it would be better to have at least some nuclear power capacity instead of relying solely on renewables?

Sure, such a scenario is not probable, but it pays to stay safe in the case of one such event. I would say having most of our power from renewables would be best, having it supported by 10-20% or so nuclear with the possibility of increase in times of need would make our electric grids super resilient to stuff

I think that’s a mindset issue. If you come at it with “I won’t be able to learn this, I’m too stupid”, you won’t give it your all and you will self sabotage. Besides, nobody is just stupid. Electronics in Eastern Europe are generally more expensive than Western Europe or the USA since the supply chains are longer. You can find stuff in Germany at 60-80% of what it costs in my country, but your price is outrageous and most likely some sort of scam

Epicureanism teaches that you will never have enough money, enough fame, enough influence, so chasing after those will never make you happy. Instead, you should focus on fulfilling your needs and fixing problems in your life, getting enough to eat, enough sleep, surrounding yourself with friends and enjoying the small things in life. When you’re unburdened by needs, you reach long-lasting happiness.

So to me, that means earning enough to fulfill your needs is enough, especially if you don’t have to worry about losing your job any time soon

I think many people say stuff like that, and indeed they would for a few months, but after a while people would look for stuff to do, and they tend to turn towards volunteering. That fulfills both daily structure and socialization. Do you think that’s something you would eventually do in that case as well?

Yup, it is. Unfortunately, I had to endure that for close to a year (I will be assigned somewhere else this summer) and me and my colleagues had to carpool. Public transport would have been the best, but for that route the bus only goes twice a day.

Nevertheless, e-bikes are great if your commute isn’t that long!

While an amazing option for city commutes, mine is close to 100km daily. I have no idea if it’s possible to use an e-bike for that, but it would certainly take up even more of my limited free time to do so.

It’s 100% happening outside as well though invasive ad placements, restriction of access to pleasant environments and underfunding of public services and property, like parks and such. It just takes much longer
