Darkness is an absence, not a substance. In order for that to work you’d need to be projecting some kind of darkness particles or negative energy and that breaks the laws of physics.

Isn’t darkness just lack of light the way cold is lack of heat or a hole is a lack of material surrounding it? These are terms that don’t describe a thing but a lack of a thing.

Technology@beehaw.org•Does traning AI/ML-models on AI-generated content causes collapse on the quality of the output?
61·9 days agoWe don’t even have a good definition for what “understanding” actually means. It’s like the word “intelligence” - there are dozens of dictionary definitions.
I find it pretty ridiculous to dismiss a long, well-thought-out piece of writing in its entirety just because one word was used in a way you don’t like. Even if you disagree with how they used the term, you most likely still understand what they meant by it. LLMs aren’t generally intelligent, but they’re also not as dumb as people make them out to be. There’s clearly real information processing happening in the background that produces accurate answers way more often than pure chance would allow.

22·11 days ago“…about 3.81 cm” is amusingly contradictory - that’s an oddly specific measurement. Still, I genuinely appreciate you doing the conversion for us.
Oh, how cool! I had a blackbird nest on my yard last year and I hope she comes back this year too.

Dull Men's Club@lemmy.world•I bought a camo net to better hide my bike whenever I go on foot
7·13 days agoThe big tires are basically like snowshoes. With a normal mountain bike you can’t really ride in snow except on hard compacted trails, but with fat tires you can - up to a point. They help on mud and sand too, but honestly they’re more of a hindrance than an advantage the rest of the year.
Still, it makes riding feel like driving a monster truck. You can go pretty much anywhere and you have infinite grip.

4·16 days agoI’m playing an overly prepared eFatBiker in full militaristic gear, trying not to be seen, with some plain ol puddle draining sprinkled in between. Surprising how many autistic activities you can combine into a single hobby.
I’m not sure what that is then I guess. Olive is the part in compression fitting that tightens around the pipe and creates the seal. My english plumbing terminology is admittedly kinda limited.
It’s against the code to put any kind of joints in inaccessible locations. These pipes go inside a protective outer pipe in the ground under the house. They can only be replaced by attatching a new pipe to the old one and pulling it through.

This “it changes the brain” framing is somewhat misleading and sets a very low bar. Neuroplasticity is constant. Your brain is changing its structure and connections all the time in response to literally everything you do.
