I bought one of the anbernic rg 351 devices 2 or 3 years ago (before I got a steam deck), and I still use it. It’s a nifty device with some cool community support for firmware and ports.
An iPhone doesn’t have buttons or a dpad for comfortable gaming. A steam deck doesn’t have the portability that these devices have. But it’s not for everyone, and could be landfill for most people.
Amazing. If my wife didn’t discourage me to buy more retro shit, I’d be all over that.
Competing with the console prices is not likely. Not only will they probably sell hardware at a loss, but they step on Sony and Microsoft territory, with whom they have deals to bringing games to steam.
Selling at a loss works for consoles because games will recoup the loss. For pc there is no guarantee. If the steam box is that cheap, corporate sector will order steam machines (by the 100s or 1000s), without guarantee to recoup the loss.
Agreed. Just a higher hardware price. But that higher price comes with better hardware, making it (hopefully) at least a little more future proof.
Cheaper/better value than anything else on the market
I just want to make this a point. As the hardware is not only cheaper, the games are too. Especially because of the sales, and the option to use other storefronts (through heroic) like epic to get free games every week or two.

Tell that to circuit board designers. It’s horrible every time a 3d model of a circuit board is added. The component height gives no visual advantage, and it’s slow as shit on corporate computers.
Honestly. No one should have to work more than 200 days a year. Reality is unfortunately different in a lot of places. But working more is usually not good for your health.

I have noticed a lot of new users. My small instance went from a little over 50 to 150 since the start of this year. Being added to join-lemmy probably helped with that. Circumstantial evidence, I know. But worth noting.
