I think these are the same root? Pika pika is used to mean clean but it’s onomatopoeia for sparkling. That double word onomatopoeia construction in japanese doesn’t really have a direct analogue in English I don’t think.

Usually directly feeding animals is looked down upon because decreasing their fear of humans tends to be a negative for their survival, and it might impact their ability to forage for their own food. With birds specifically, though, putting up feeders is more mixed. Migration takes an enormous amount of energy and and human sprawl has removed a lot of natural food sources. And especially in wintertime, food can be quite scarce for birds. But at the same time bird feeders can actually be big spreaders of disease and I know that there was guidance that people should take down feeders at the height of bird flu.
Now when it comes to mallards, they’re honestly a species that is incredibly urbanized already, so I don’t think directly feeding them is doing a great deal of harm.
Pika is pronounced “pie-kuh” generally. Pikachu comes from pika pika (japanese onomatopoeia for “sparking/sparkling” usually with the connotation of clean) + chuu (sound a mouse makes/squeak).

442·3 months agoNest parasitism is not unique to cuckoos and you can’t really put a value judgement on evolution. Brown-headed cowbirds are the most common nest parasites in North America. There’s lots of species where the parents kill their own children if they either think they aren’t strong enough to survive or if the food supply is too insecure to care for them. It’s just nature.
Oh good it’s the New 52 Joker bird.
I dunno, I wouldn’t think a cooking sub would consider making a mornay sauce and boiling some noodles to be a real heavy burden. As for the cost maybe? The cheese would be the most expensive component but I think it’s probably worth the upgrade to go from powdered cheese to real cheese.
Why use boxed Mac and cheese as a base, though?
There are a number of substances in the body that could be refined into glucose.

Yeah uh…if a recipe calls for eggs, you should use eggs. You are not going to get the expected results just subbing these. If you’re trying to make a vegetarian version of something you will be much better off finding a recipe that was designed that way than trying to modify a non-vegetarian recipe.

It’s largely because I’m not sure to what extent breeds existed in the ancient world but I suppose considering the time spans involved I shouldn’t be surprised.
Interesting how much the ancient mug looks like modern dog breeds. I would’ve expected them to look more wolfy.
Is this Canadian soil? It may be a declaration of war.

1·8 months agoI’ve actually wondered about this. Given how many games a) have existing PC ports and b) are built using things like Unity that handle the input layer I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s a lot more games that just work with m+kb than you’d think.

3·8 months agoYeah, I used a mouse for a bit on FF14. They’re plug and play, although they may not support extended buttons and such since there’s no installing additional drivers. Keyboards are also supported for any time you need to enter text! Pretty essential for MMOs.

20·8 months agoPretty sure that this will end up being integral to like…2 games, probably first party ones. Did you know that you can plug a mouse into a PS4/5 and it’ll work fine? Most players don’t care about that, either.

Yeah I just think it’s kind of neat how the names of English pokemon are formed in a similar way to how they are in Japanese.
