Linux@lemmy.ml•Hello, I’m going to be getting a new computer soon and have thought about linux. Questions inside
12·2 years agoLinux Mint is great for beginners. Have you ever installed windows? Installing Linux Mint is as easy as that. The day to day use is not much different compared to windows. Don’t be afraid to try it out, you can always go back to windows if it does not work out for you
Linux has it, KDE offers night light by default.

13·2 years ago.ml domains were “free” until recently, so many used them for their small scale projects. I did as well.

Linux@lemmy.ml•[Question] From MacOS to Linux, need advice on best software packages
2·2 years agoa minimal, configurable (file based for git) tiling window manager
I like i3, it ticks all your boxes. Made my own config in 2020 and it still works. Keep in mind that you have to design your whole desktop enviroment when you go the window manager route. bspwm might be an option as well
terminal based package management as easy as brew (maybe Nix?)
Every linux distro has it, I’m an Arch person, many people like Archs package manager pacman, so you could go with EndevourOS or if you’re adventorous with vsnilla Arch.
as much terminal emulator based as possible (i honestly mostly only need a browser and the terminal, most other apps have a TUI that i can use with the keyboard, see the above requirement)
Well, what kind of software you’ll run is up to you. Linux has all the TUI stuff. If you haven’t already, check out vim, emacs and nnn. Don’t forget to customize your shell (and choose it first, i would recommend zsh or fish).
General advice: Look into r/unixporn, most posts there have dotfiles, look for something you like an try it (with a fresh user that you can delete afterwarda maybe?)
Iirc AntiMicroX can do this.

Technology@lemmy.ml•WokeGPT: Study Says ChatGPT Shows Liberal Bias
2·2 years agoYou can’t have a chatbot that gives good answers without having a chatbot that gives liberal answers.
Arch Linux
Reasons:
- Pacman
- the AUR
- community driven
- bleeding edge
- pragmatic stance regarding closed source software
- sane defaults
- minimalism, build your own without too much compiling
- the wiki
So I’m an Arch user since 2013 and I don’t think I’m toxic. I am not really offended by this post but a bit worried. Why this hate against Arch (users)? I use Arch, btw is a meme that may has some truth, but like every good meme it is exaggerated. Arch users may have some pride in tunning Arch but most of the time they’re (in my expierence) helpful and inclusive. The OS itself fits right to my expectations: community driven, pragmatic, highly customizable. And I think the community is doing a lot for the overall Linux community with the Arch Wiki and for the Arch-based family with the AUR.
Edit: I didn’t seek help in the Arch fotum myself but read some threads there. Haven’t encountered any bm there.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the most exciting development happening in your field of work/study at the moment?
1·2 years agoIn maths, we are excited about new things even if they seem to have absolutely no practical value or application. Sometimes, things become important later on, like prime numbers, which have been studied just for fun for centuries, and are now the backbone of encrypted communication.
So the only reason why this exciting is because nobody did it before.

1·2 years agoWe solved the Ein Stein Problem. And when I say we I mean people way smarter than me and when i say ein stein i actually mean ein Stein as in german for one stone. It’s a shape that can tile the plane infinitely without producing a repeating pattern.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•If you don't mind me asking what is so important about privacy?
2·2 years agoPrivacy brings security under totalitarian regimes or in countries that shift in that direction. They might say if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear, but there are unjust conditions under which you have to hide things, like that you belong to minority that is targeted by the authorities. Like the nazis did in the third reich, where privacy was reduced during their takeover. Or that you belong to a party that is suddenly framed as evil and enemies of the nation. Or if you have connections to “traitors” or other “scum”.

2·2 years agoThanks for sharing.
Nah, that’s just wrong. You can compare yourself in other ways than how much fake money you earn. Fun thing is: truly communistic society would mean easier work for most people.
And communism does work in small scale enviroments. Families, cooperatives, tribes. Sometimes neighborhoods.
This whole “Sounds great but won’t work” rhethoric is just what the ones that would loose their power in communsim want you to think. If you dig into it you will see, that there were and are a lot of efforts to discredit the idea.
Thanks, mass murderer!
