Linux@lemmy.ml•Which one do you prefer? htop, btop or top?
6·2 years agoI like
btopbecause of its ease of use and modern gui. When I opentopor evenhtopit feels like I’m using something designed for a dumb terminal from the 70s. When openingbtopit feels like something designed for how computers are used now and not 50 years ago. Also to my knowledge It’s the only full system monitor to include GPU monitoring (while other GPU monitors exist they usually only monitor the GPU and not the whole system)
Only testing. The default repos got it just now

Linux@lemmy.ml•Can Linux be dual booted on a computer with Windows?
15·2 years agoThats a good solution only if you:
- Don’t use BS software that refuses to run in a VM.
- Don’t need proper graphical acceleration.
Depending on what OP need on windows this could be a problem.

Linux@lemmy.ml•(Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?
2·2 years agoProbably PoP_OS!. There isn’t anything wrong with the os itelf, my problem is rather that its often sugested as a beginer friendly distro which in my experience it absolutely isn’t. The amount of issues I encountered while trying to use it almost drove me away from Linux as a whole. (It was the first distro i tried) The time I spent trying to make everything work was comparable to Arch.
I realy like the idea and the DE they ship by default is one of the best ones I’ve seen (it’s like GNOME but in my opinion much better) but the bugs make it a terrible suggestion for new users.
I used to like his content and his videos got me into linux but i feel that his newer videos have a lot more politics compared to the older ones and i very much disagree with most of his political views i don’t realy watch him anymore

What are the advantages of Wayland?
The big one is proper support for diffrent refresh rate monitors and VRR. Also some security improvment and long term support (X11 probably has only a few years before development stops).
What are the disadvantages?
Its still a little buggy in some cases (especialy when using Nvidia hardware) but with an AMD or Intel GPU its more then usable. Some apps don’t play nice with Xwayland but its pretty rare.
How’s gaming?
I haven’t encontered any major issues with games. Some games might need launch parameters but usualy you can just google it and find the answer very quickly. Performance its exactly the same as on X (maybe even slightly better)
What would be the best way to switch?
On your desktop with KDE you can just select “KDE (Wayland)” in your display manager and KDE should just run like normal but with Wayland. On you laptop you’d need to switch to a diffrent WM since i3 dosen’t support Wayland. Your best bet would probably be Sway since its compatible with i3 configurations.
Why have you made the switch?
I wanted to check out how well Wayland works and found that it works fine for me, and so i decided to move. Also X was giving me issues with screen tearing and multiple monitors.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Why are random characters missing in my Debian virtualbox
1·2 years agodeleted by creator
The only breakages i have encouterted were caused by nvidia (and there were a lot of those). If we exclude nvidia issues then i have had a very problem free expirience.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?
1·2 years agoYou are pretty lucky if you haven’t experienced any issues. For most people thogh spots are gonna be:
-
Gaming. While a lot of games work perfectly a lot also don’t work (mainly if they have a
kernel level anticheatrootkit) -
Nvidia. Do i have to say any more?
-
Wifi. Often wifi cards just don’t work or work very poorly.
-
Laptop specific features. Stuff like a MUX switch, ambient light sensors and fingerprint scanners very often have no drivers for linux.
-

Did Apple allow JIT or is it using interpreted CPU emulation? Because if it’s using interpreted emulation then the performance is gonna be realy bad.
Edit: I actually checked and it’s using interpreted emulation. Interested to see the performance impact.
