I was just thinking that a PiHole might make for a pretty good parental control too. Slightly more advanced networking, but that way you could block YouTube (and anything else) on a per-device basis while still allowing software updates and the like though (at least until your kid figures out how to override the network provided DNS, but at that point they’re hopefully either responsible enough for YouTube or well on their way to a promising career in tech). Plus it gives some observability into what sites are being visited if that’s needed.

Very much agree though, it shouldn’t take an IT degree/ hobby to do parental controls.

Only for the first 6 books or so, was listening to Persepolis a few weeks ago and had to do a double take when the reader finally pronounced it with the hard g (“gim ball”).

Not a parent (saw your post on the all feed and wandered in), so you’ll have to screen a few episodes to make sure the content fits what your looking for, but I know Disney has a Spiderman show for young audiences as part of their Disney Jr. lineup called Spidey and His Amazing Friends. Can’t say I’ve seen it myself, but I’d be willing to bet it’s most likely where your daughter’s classmates are encountering the characters, so it might be a good spot to start your search. That said, while YouTube might have clips and snipits from the show, I’d avoid it like the plague, any local library with their salt will almost certainly have a selection of DVDs for kids that you could borrow (and failing that there’s also Disney+).

Actually, the library idea got me thinking… Given the popularity of the show, there’s almost certainly going to be tie-in kids books if you wanted to go that route. Probably not board books, but definitely something with pictures that you could sit down and read tougher.

I’m a software engineer and I think one of my personal favorite random applications of Pythagoras/ trig was in my data visualization class back in scool. The assignment was to take a dataset of Soviet space launches with dogs and display it in an interactive approachable manner (ie less rigorous data science and more local science center), so I thought it would be fun to show rockets for each lauch and animate them rotating around the earth. Queue the trig to place each icon an appropriate distance (scaled to the launch height in my data), angle, and spacing from the earth.

I’ll admit it doesn’t come up all that often (in web development), but it’s nice to have that foundational knowledge to dredge up when I need it.

If you liked Scalzi, I highly recommend Old Man’s War if you haven’t read it. I’ve only read first one, so I can’t speak to the rest of the series, but I really enjoyed the kind of gritty starship troopers-esq vibe laced with humor and realistic characters.

Does it have a Stargate? Does it make whooshy sounds? Sounds like Stargate to me
