SNW started off prestige trek and turned into a pastiche of everything and utter shitposting. (I’d say its a lesson in serialising enshittification but american gods quite rightly owns that throne)
They fucked up using Rhys Derby. I didn’t even think that was fucking possible
I can only speak for myself, but it had a great start and only declined in seasons 2 and three, with multiple outright problematic episodes in season 3 (that also just went against everything Star Trek represents in terms of values and philosophy, and while there occasionally were really troublesome episodes before (Code of Honor, anyone?), the density of those episodes in S3 was awfully high). Season 4 was slightly better again, but some issues seem to have become woven into the fabric of the show (why on earth are they trying to depict Spock so damn straight and take all the queerness out of him?), the amount of gimmick episodes was staggering and I do not believe they can reach the highs of S1 again. And when a show peaks in its first season, I find that pretty sad, tbh (even more so the longer a show runs).
SNW is amazing in the first season, pretty good second but I could see the plot loosening, and off the rails (derogatory) in S3. They didnt even bother to build towards my guy Pike’s storyline it started on.
Now, all that being said, SNW is still fun even if it goes no where and doesnt do half of what it could with the characters to instead focus on meta themed episodes about TV as a whole, I still like it and will watch it in the reruns.
It definitely needed 6 or so seasons and it would’ve bloomed better.
why do folks in this community throw so much shade at SNW?
I think it’s pretty good and like how it mixes scifi, camp and character development.
The show is not perfect but any stretch, but I feel it gets a ton of outlandish critiques.

I find plenty to like in 2 and 3 but 3 had a lot of very loud episodes with way too much screaming for no reason.
Best of the newer live action Trek and its not even close
Super low bar though
