In The Klingon Dictionary written by Marc Okrand and published around the release of The Search for Spock, the word is “ghargh” and is defined as “serpent, worm” meaning it’s a generic term used to refer to worm-like things.
In “A Matter of Honor” Riker calls it" Serpent-worm", making it into a proper noun. More the fault of Burton Armus who wrote the script than Johnathan Frakes, but annoying either way.
