Ive switched to running syncthing inside termux. Battery life has actually improved significantly. You need to manually start syncthing after a reboot though. There’s probably a way to start it automatically using scripts or an automation app.

Might need to search around for exact commands but the main thing is you’ll need the fdroid or source apk of termux for this to work from what I remember. So setup termux up on Obtainium or fdroid. Then inside termux pkg install syncthing should work. You might need to run the storage scripts found here https://wiki.termux.com/wiki/Internal_and_external_storage You can move over your existing syncthing exported config files (remove encryption first before exporting) to ~/.local/state/syncthing and edit the config.xml file. Remove the lines for username and password. This will allow you to create a new username and password when you run syncthing in termux. It should open a browser window to http://127.0.0.1:8384/ which is the normal syncthing web interface.

No, the maintainer of syncthing fork deleted their account and the repos out of the blue. There’s a lengthy forum post about it here.

Oh, I didn’t notice. fdroid just switched it over I suppose. I even noticed the weird release notes and checked the repo but just accepted I had misremembered the repo name and maintainer name.

As others commented Obtanium just swapped it over too. Everyone’s in the same boat, or rather on the same rug - without the rug.

I strongly advise against using anything from researchxxl. The conditions under which the fork changed hands are unclear, continued development has been poor, and researchxxl’s behaviour has been consistently uninspiring and unhelpful. See issue 16 if you don’t believe me. In the meantime, I’ve uninstalled Syncthing-Fork and will wait until nel0x’s version is in F-Droid.

I have to confess that I was not aware of this, thank you so much for letting me (us) know. It’s interesting, and shows why taking the time to research software as well as the devs in charge is so important. I did not see any red flags other than the way the handover has been handled though.

I get it, and I am well aware you’re correct about the risks, but the infrastructure I’m running doesn’t really allow me to go without it at the moment. I did stop the updates in my Obtainium entirely.

The good news is that this just came up: https://github.com/nel0x/syncthing-android/releases

So, it’s looking bright right now.

I uninstalled syncthing-fork when I first heard “foul voices on the air” (LotR ref) because I haven’t needed it recently, & decided to reinvestigate when I next need it (& the dust might have settled itself by then). In the meantime someone commented that you can configure & use vanilla syncthing on termux instead. I use termux for so much already that it is the obvious choice (for me) if actually true. If you hadn’t heard that either it might be a viable choice for you too…

I wasn’t following this too closely, but read that the other day.

What struck me was the new owner not having an account on the forum. :/

Yeah, I may be wrong with the timing. It happens to me all the time. All I know is I switched the releases repo in Obtainium the moment I saw Catfriend was dropping it and this one was up. I know nothing about this researchxxl guy (or girl, or guys, or girls, whatever), but I didn’t know anything about Catfriend either. Those who mentioned the warning, thank you.

Ultimately that is your choice. I personally will not use researchxxl’s version considering they appeared out of nowhere and there was 0 communication about the transition. For now I will continue to use Catfriend’s version and perhaps switch to nel0x’s in the future.
