      The unflattering little belt box, which hit at every actor and actress’s widest point of the body, tasks me. It has no explanation in canon and only appears in this one. By “The Wrath of Khan”, they got rid of it and the uniforms looked badass again. Any theories? Anti-Tribble emitter?

        I recall reading somewhere it was some kind of life-support device. Can’t remember where or when though.

        In the novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the life support monitor belt buckle was non-canonically named the “perscan” device.
