Open Source@lemmy.ml•Apple's iOS takes a bite out of your freedom
4·20 days agoMy desktop computer is plenty secure, but I can install whatever app I want from any source. The OS provides security tools to help protect against viruses. Even on a Mac desktop you can install apps outside the app store.
Apple and Google are pushing for their app stores to be the only option. Imagine having one store chain in the whole world.
And while the app store apps have a verification process, they’re not impenetrable. Apps slip through the system and scam apps are allowed to run rampent. What’s considered malware now has also changed, 25 years ago an app constantly “phoning home”, scanning your data, other apps and collecting data would have been considered malware.
Devices would be most secure if we didn’t run any application.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Does your family is also against your privacy means?
9·24 days agoTell her; “no mom, if some 30 year old man was tracking me, reading my mail, texts and tracked my location you’d be getting ready to murder him. Why should I let gmail get away with the same shit?”
Simple, we treat “corporate crimes” the same we would if a 30+ year old man committed them to a 18 year old girl, because that’s what’s happening. Once you’re 18 the “child data protections” go away.
They essentially planted bugs in every 18 year old girl’s life and if your phrase it that way, the masses will realize how horrifying it is.
Google shouldn’t have our entire location history, that’s called stalking.
Google shouldn’t have an entire log of our private messages, that’s called eavesdropping.
Microsoft shouldn’t be taking screen shots of our screen, that’s called spying.
Amazon shouldn’t be using security cams to scan us for “AI” purposes.
Apple shouldn’t be using our phone microphones for “data collection”.
Facebook shouldn’t be compiling, scanning and indexing our photos.
I can fix her! And I get to learn about the Krebs cycle too? 10/10 date!

Privacy@lemmy.ml•It takes a while for the point of it all to settle in but when it does....
3·2 months agoNot OP, I went from a Pix5 google stock to Pix9 with Graphene on it. I transfered data manually. I think it the best way to go about it.
A lot of of apps have an export setting feature that I used.
IMO is also a good time to clear out bloat - the app you haven’t opened in 3 years doesn’t need to get copied over. Old downloads or a meme you shared one time 2 years ago - gone. Pictures or anything of sentiment get backed up and maybe copied to new phone.
I transfered most files by plugging in both phones into the computer and copying files the easy way.
I also setup syncthing to automatically sync the picture folders, a folder where I put copies of the exported setting files and few others for misc files and stuff I want backed up regularly.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is connecting a Windows computer to your wired network worse than keeping it on Wi-Fi?
4·2 months agoWhen discussing data transferring between devices like this, I’d treat WiFi as another “invisible” port on the switch.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Audacity 4 will be a full UI overhaul apparently.
20·2 months agoAre people are actually upset about an auto update feature? A feature that has been pretty standard in programs for a very long time?
I understood some of the upset when they added telemetry, but auto-update?

30·2 months agoIn other words tasks that “AI” is actually good for, not attempting to generate your music or apply some kind of “magic filter”.
The second one. It’ll be a bit rough, but overall should be a smoother ride for the occupants.
I use fossify for most of my core apps, they are what their predecessor was; simple.
And like other said, “Simple” was bought out, but the fork lives on.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Let's be honest.... GrapheneOS sucks the big one
23·3 months agoHonestly, its not perfect, but at least I’m not having ai prompts and constant adverts shoved in my face.
The stock Graphine apps and home launcher are very basic, they didn’t focus on them because there are a prethora of better options already out there. For the basics, I recommend lawnchair, fossify gallary, fossify file manager, fossify phone, and open camera. For messages, I’ve got nothing. Only thing I’ve found that works right with group chats and sending pictures is google messages…

1·3 months agoYeah, we measure our soda in liters all the time, but only the 2 litre bottles. Other sizes are in ounces, and milk is in gallons and sometimes pints.
