Baking is a big one yes. Not just American recipes - old British ones too. And there are various useful estimations you can use too; one egg is about an ounce. Three ounces each of flour, sugar, butter plus three eggs makes a pretty good Victoria sponge which fits nicely in a 12cm baking tin.

Except on our roads some things are actually in metric, like if a sign says “100 yards” that’s actually 100 meters, since it was the first step in converting everything to metric (which we appear to have given up on)

I grew up being taught in both, but was told that metric was the future so not to worry too much about imperial, so I confuse the number of ounces in a pound quite often, amongst other things
Where I work, the vast majority of things are metric…except very old drawings, which sometimes use yards.
Honestly I would prefer we just switch to metric and stay there, but the road sign argument is “cost” and even 20 years ago that was quite valid.

I’ve tried it. Can’t really see much difference from not using it. As others have said, being a personal user you’re not much of a target - being smart about what you run on your computer has much more of an effect on security.

I found a personal tutor and I spend an hour with them every week (online). Outside of that I watch YouTube videos (with English subtitles) and practice with friends who I have who know the language too. I have tried Memrise, Duolingo and others in the past and I have made considerably more progress this way.
Basically: find someone who can actually make sure you’re getting something from it and find a good way to practice too
I have an original reMarkable (not the 2) and whilst it’s a but slow for big fancy scanned PDFs it is generally pretty good for what I want. It does also run linux so you can ssh into it and do everything locally away from their cloud services which is nice
My hair is thick and waist length. In the summer months I have to have it tied up somehow or I overheat, much to the annoyance of people in my life who like to see it down 😅
I’ve considered trying natural lightening techniques (some people say lemon juice, others in my family with similar hair say it works) to lighten it to reduce the heat. Maybe this year I’ll give it a go.
One other thing I’ll say is that if you’re already hot, adding volume makes it worse as it traps warm air

Mac OS has never used X11 as a primary display system. Apple had a version they supplied with older Mac OS X versions for people using older Unix applications (and half-arsed ports) but that’s been unsupported since 2012. You can still install the modern “XQuartz” open source equivalent, but it’s still secondary.
