Linux@lemmy.ml•how can i make use of the free space in a bootable usb drive?
2·13 days agoIf it shows up in gparted correctly it sounds like you did it correctly but just to make sure, don’t dd the iso to the mounted partition, you don’t want to have a filesystem with a .iso file on it. dd directly to the device (like /Dev/sda1 or whatever). BTW you don’t need dd just use cp.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Maybe there's seagulls, maybe they're just crazyEnglish
10·22 days agoFood and silence = 100% of seaguls harass you Food and screaming = some seagulls will leave you alone but never all
Except that is not how it works and courts have in the past ruled for the website and against people who took “secret” information out of web responses that were “not supposed to be displayed” in the browser.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•'The Owl House’ creator Dana Terrace situation with Disney+ positive views on AI generated contentEnglish
13·23 days agoI have absolutely no clue how to parse that title. What situation? Who has a positive view? Just what?
Thats what discrete means (in an mathematical context)
Absolutely love sublime. Im not entirely sure but if I remember correctly they are perfectly fine with you using it for free as along as you don’t use it commercially. I used it for free during university and then at work I just asked if they will buy me a personal license since I am much faster with sublime than without and had all my keybinds and python scrips for automation.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that Toys R Us wasn't killed by competition, but by private equity companiesEnglish
35·2 months agoThat’s how landlords work.
Take loan, buy houses, house has to pay back loan via rent, rent is paid for by renter.
Landlord gets house for free, everything paid by renter.
Had to check for unknown WiFi signals for a client. So I was walking around with my laptop in hand and a WiFi antenna. So cafeteria, toilet, staircase, server room, chill out lounge, parking spot and rooftop. It was pretty funny trying to assign all the WiFi networks to the cars in the parking lot and to the other buildings and stores around. That day I learned just how far away you can still see WiFi networks if you use a reasonably strong antenna (just a usb-stick basically).

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Europe’s cookie law messed up the internet. Brussels wants to fix it.
18·2 months agoThat is factually incorrect. Many websites would literally stop working. Not “mildly confuse”, but “be unusable”.
You ever logged in to a website? That’s a cookie. Ever used an online shopping cart? That’s a cookie. Ever changed a websites language in a dropdown? That’s a cookie.
All these cookies are first party. There are also essential third party cookies for thing like SSO (“sign in with google/Facebook/github/etc”)
Tell your browser to reject 100% of cookies and tell me how much fun that is.
“Legitimate Interest” is the bullshit term. Why does an ad company have a legitimate interest to my data? That should be removed from the law.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What largest explorable towns/cities from videogames do you remember?
21·2 months agoNovigrad from witcher 3 is pretty big, especially for a medival setting. Games like cyberpunk or GTA have huge cities but they feel smaler because you get around in cars and motorbikes. In novigrad you walk.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Valve seems to have quietly rolled out a major upgrade to their Anti-Cheat system and it’s apparently wrecking havoc on cheat providersEnglish
1·3 months agoNo, absolutely the best comparison because the same thing happens with bans and bad moderators who ignore requests and refuse to explain a ban.

5·3 months agoAnd you can contest the ban and potentially get it lifted and return to the same game.

652·3 months agoWhen you suspect someone of being highly dangerous you put them in jail even if they are not convicted yet. And when it turns out they are innocent they are released.
A ban is like jail not like a death sentence …
Dwarf planets: Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, Eris
There should also be one (Ceres) in Jupiters shadow, right of the planet the arrow is pointing to. Which is Mars and not earth btw …
workable
No. It would require guillotining all billionaires, dissolution of a shit ton of wasteful industries (AI for example), vast reduction of meat consumption (which also means closing large parts of the meat industry) …
Basically it requires the rich and powerful to not be rich and not be powerful anymore

Linux@lemmy.ml•I could use some troubleshooting help for a Linux laptop
3·5 months agoPretty sure secure boot is a UEFI feature so if the board only supports BIOS then there is no secure boot anyway.
JKR can’t write a consistent world that makes sense either.
No there absolutely is a way without unconsented human experiments. You can go slow and prove every step of your procedure is save (enough) before doing it. That way you dont have to lie to the other people involved.

I would put it down to censorship. Not of Linux directly but of information about noncomformity. Windows is the default OS for desktop PCs and I imagine it is easier to get exposed to the idea of searching an alternative in the west than in China. If you never question the oppressive bullshit corporations are doing to you, you will not think to break free and use Linux.
