  • They know exactly what they’re doing and how people feel about it.

They haven’t made money on Windows in years. Nobody has been willing to pay for a new version of Windows since XP. What they do make money on is cloud services. So Windows is a loss leader.

Just like the cheap rotisserie chicken at Costco is there to make you walk past and look at everything else they’re selling, the modern role of Windows is to funnel people towards Microsoft cloud services, which is what makes them money. Step 1 of that process is to make sure you create a Microsoft account.

There’s less and less reason to do it (and it’s never 5). On systems without floating point you might want to round it a bit, but only if the specific thing you’re doing allows it, and even then you’re more likely to do a fixed-point approach by using e.g. 314 and dividing by 100 later, or adjusting that value a bit so you can divide by 128 via bitshift if you’re on a chip where division is expensive. However, in 2025 you almost certainly should have picked a chip with an FPU if you’re doing trigonometry.

And while rounding pi to 3 or 4 is certainly just a meme, there are other approximations which are used, like small-angle approximations, where things like sin(x) can be simplified to just x for a sufficiently small x.

  • As a European from elsewhere in Europe, I’m never going back to Milan. Maybe it’s fine if you’re into fashion, but if you’re not there’s not much to look at except a cathedral which resembles every other cathedral, and it’s impossible to get a photo of it without also having a friendship bracelet scammer in the frame, actively harassing you.

All tourist locations in Italy and France have people trying to scam you (and some non-scammers just trying to sell you cheap toys), but Milan is the only place I’ve been to where they’re straight up harassing you non-stop. Go to Pisa instead, it’s super relaxing there and you can marvel at their past mistakes in structural engineering. A far better deal.
