  • Translation is expensive, it needs to not only to translate the story but the author’s style and pun. A niche book won’t be translated, especially in smaller languages (you have a bigger market when you translate in Spanish/French/German than when you translate in Luxemburgish or Nepalese). With that regard, english-language writer have the advantage of using a language that many can read, giving publishing company a glimpse of the translation potential.

With the power of “LLM” and translation app like deepl, it may work better in the future. However, at the moment, deepl is far from giving a professional grade results, especially when you have ambiguous word or a “specific but uncommon context”. It work to share a blog-post/news article, but won’t be sufficient to get fun to read book or an usable technical manual (However, corporate legal department may have a different opinion, it will be an interesting trial the day an accident occur due to an ambiguity in an automated translation)

  • Horror RPG taught me about how important it is to take the time to play normality, let the player connect with their character, have fun and light roleplay moment, until that moment when horror steps in.

Player dealing with monsters and having blood up to their knee ends up being epic high fantasy but not horror.

On a more norme activity the movie the descent is a great exemple the first half slowly drift from stressful to frightening, then the second half is girl fighting Gollum in the mud, and turn from frightening to comical

  • I am sorry for you OP that you have to go through this. I hope that you’re followed by a mental health professional which can help you. 5 month without leaving the house is entering in the hikikomori territory. I wish I could give you relevant advices, but I assume all the simple advise simply won’t work (Just like you can’t just tell someone with a broken leg to keep running)

If you get better and can go out again, what do you wish to do ? Is there a sport/hobby you want to try ? Is it available in your city ? is there a language you want to learn ?

  • In the 80’s/90’s there was a huge satanic panic and RPG player were part of it. At the time the hobby was mysterious, many players are neurodivergent, and seen as socially awkward or edgy and as soon as a RPG player committed suicide, it was because of D&D. Not the other way around (depressed kid plays RPG to be with similar people, but still ends up dying from the depression).

To be fair, at the time the hobby also played on this image with games like In nomine Satanis or simply Vampire and it’s only recently that the community add a huge focus on emotional safety and inclusions.

  • Work less as a society, so finally switch to the 32h weeks and setup the Universal basic income, it would allow to share the work (because someone needs to pick-up the thrash) and leverage on the productivity gains to benefit to everyone.

Provide training, and support life-long education, you should keep your unemployment rights while attending university as an adult for example, but also offer more short training including some level update for people whose skill got rusty in a previous job.

Promote non merchant activities. A volunteer who coaches kids sport or plays amateur theatre in nursing home and hospital does more good to society than a marketing corporate executive, why are the latter seen as more important ?
