Technology@lemmy.ml•Apple calls for changes to anti-monopoly laws and says it may stop shipping to the EU
10·2 months agoCame here to say the same. It’s an empty threat. After all this is famously the company who made dual physical SIM iPhones for China and other Asian regions because eSIM isn’t/wasn’t legal.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Why are so many European countries getting worried about encryption and/or age verification? Why *now*?
26·3 months agoIt’s a coordinated play, that’s why. Their hope and plan is that VPNs become worthless because you’re gonna be VPNing into censored countries anyway. They won’t want anonymity/pseudo-anonymity like we’ve had.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Google will block sideloading of unverified Android apps starting next yearEnglish
4·3 months agoTo be fair, unless you’re using a private, controllable DNS with a frontend interface (like NextDNS, Pihole, etc) – DNS ad blocking is “all or nothing”. Those apps let you control which apps and services and domains come through.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Proton freezes Swiss investment over surveillance fears
11·4 months agoWhich is what they’re doing, but the bigger point is that you can’t say you’re going to move while all of this (subpoenas, etc) are happening. Before, sure. After, sure. During? Nope.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Proton freezes Swiss investment over surveillance fears
13·4 months agoI’m not inherently trying to defend Proton here, but the question to ask here is – did they have a choice? I’m asking seriously, and not rhetorically. Did they willingly hand over the data, or were they legally required to, by Swiss law?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Google Gemini is about to control your messages and calls, even if you say no
1·5 months agoThey know what it is. But they think it’s optional, because us plebs don’t deserve a choice. They think they run our world because we use their platforms.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Lemme.ee is closing, where do I go. Only been here 12 days lol?
7·6 months agoI’m a part of Lemmy.zip for a few months now. Great server with transparent admins who post about server updates and such. It’s tech-oriented as an instance, but it’s federated, so you still have access to all other servers. I’m a computer nerd, hence why I picked it.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is it safe to travel with your phone right now?
1·9 months agoThank you. I say it because I was genuinely asking the person who replied to me, in case I was wrong. In the context of privacy, it’s extremely important to know for sure.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is it safe to travel with your phone right now?
3·9 months agoEvidence/source? My understanding is you inherently cannot go back to BFU (before first unlock) state once you’re in AFU unless you reboot.
Again, I’m not talking about simply disabling biometrics unlock – BFU = your decryption key is not in memory yet (at all).

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is it safe to travel with your phone right now?
281·9 months agoDo a restart (even if you have to hold the power button for 10 seconds). Because at initial boot state, the contents of your phone are encrypted. Any unlocks after the initial unlock, your phone is decrypted and the key is in RAM. Only a password/pin (no fingerprint/FaceID/etc) can be used to decrypt your data.
In lockdown mode, my understanding is that you’re simply disabling biometrics (but not encrypting anything).
It sucks because that’s also Google and their products/services. So it’s like jumping from one shitty platform into another in the context, except the other one is more niche.
