I a desperate to self host, but do not know how to code. I use Debian, installing what I need for work, music, photo editing. All very low level, but accessible to me and far better than Windows. Keeping fingers crossed for something accessible between the full “black belt” level user and, well, me.

Public cameras recording our private lives recorded MUST be fully regulated and accountable. Private cameras slightly more tricky. I take the view that self hosting options are the best option. We need more devices that just work for the lay person. RING (and similar) should be considered a shit-show for privacy rights.

Everyone has their own use case, needs and preferences My thought is that you have the following options - not in any order as you will have your preferences

1. Buy a Pixel and install Graphene
2. See if you can install Linage OS, or buy another phone that can

4. Search and disable apps you don’t want (limited at best)
5. Install RethinkDNS & Firewall.

What did I do? On my Samsung tablet, I used Universal Android Debloater AND run RethinkDNS & Firewall. Not as good as Graphene, but cheap / free and 90% of the same.

If your old Gmail account lives, my thought is to carry on using that with auto forwarding to a fresh Tuta account and see how that goes, using the fresh Tuta and copying to old Gmail for redundancy / fallback. Thats what I did

Entirely accidentally. My clinical colleague had an “odd looking” laptop screen. It was Ubuntu. He’s a genius level clever lad, and after some questions, he helped me to set up dual boot on my windows machine. Within 5-months, that was an Ubuntu only machine. Now on Debian, still can’t do anything much more than basic with the terminal, but the roads led here very naturally.
