If you want something immediate to daily drive and want more of a custom system as opposed to Arch then maybe give NixOS a shot

IMO the main customization part of Gentoo is that you can compile the world without the libs you don’t want to have. With NixOS (AFAIK) being also package-based, how can it offer more custom system than Arch?

I loved how tailored to me was Gentoo. But as time passes and your hardware gets older, the compilation times get longer and longer. That’s what made me to do the hop

I’ve heard some time ago that now Gentoo is offering more pre-compiled packages. But I don’t know the extent. libstd, gcc and libreoffice were the worst offenders in my time

If you’re going to be compiling your own kernel (or now Gentoo ships with pre-compiled ones too?) my word of advice would be “don’t forget to compile in the filesystem support”

  • They reversed course, so it’s not an immediate issue.

    I’m not convinced yet

Some article as I can’t find my Xitter password to see the source

designed an “advanced flow” for installing unverified apps. This new system is specifically intended for developers and power users who have a higher risk tolerance and want the ability to download unverified apps.

It is not a casual toggle. The advanced flow is built to resist exploitation. The company emphasizes that the flow is designed to resist coercion, ensuring users aren’t tricked into bypassing safety checks under pressure from scammers. Social engineering often walks victims through dismissing every warning on screen, so Google is adding friction that fights back.

That can very well mean we’ll be compiling everything by hand and sending it via USB app by app

  • In general it shouldn’t. You might need to install some new drivers for the new chipset but in itself the system should work. Especially since nowadays kernels are shipped with a lot of stuff and I’m guessing you’re not compiling yours
Regarding messing up with live environment, I don’t remember if GPT is enough for UEFI to load your bootloader or maybe you might need to install something in there

    funded by three-letter agencies

That for sure can feel iffy but if the code is sound and the keys are stored on client only, that does not have to mean they can snoop. Leveraging access might be a vector, though.
The agencies do need something that is a. really secure and b. present in global population, so it’s not a dead giveaway “that guy is a spy”

    using your phone number

    They haven’t dropped that yet?

I’m afraid that the crowd that cares about BigTech meddling in our world has already done all of those. It’s the other majority that we somehow need to convince

Personally, I’m done with preaching. I just use the better services when I can, so when the eyes open, I will be ready to be a guide

BTW, wasn’t Signal so-so? I don’t remember what the critique was but I remember making mental note that it’s also not a solution

Oh yeah, those were very good apps. Exactly how phone apps should be, clear UI, flexible settings with file import/export, etc. It seems it’s time to switch, though.

FWIW, I have been using Simple calendar and did not have issues with notifications. I just migrated to Fossify calendar and so far it seems to be sending notifications fine too.
In general notifications can be a pain on OS apps. I managed to pull a few of my friends to use Delta Chat with me. Half of them are not getting notified and it seems we have everything set up the same in the battery settings etc ¯\(ツ)
