  • I identify with this soooo much. I was solo traveling back in 2016 and 2017 and was taking so many pictures. Then I had a kid in 2022, figured I’d get a fancy new 25mm f2 Zeiss as well to start documenting, but my phone has been my main camera these past few years. The saying goes, the best camera is the one that you have on you at the moment.

I appreciate the perspective. Good point about the car as well! I was more just hoping to air some grievances with a toddler who’s been a home body this whole trip. I get it though, you have to meet them where they are. Just needed to vent after being frustrated at my lack of adventure these past few days.

  • FF7 Rebirth. I’m sort of struggling to push through. I just got to chapter 10, figure if I’m this far to just mainline the story to completion. I fully completed the first two open world areas but have been ignoring most of the others after that. The open world traversal seems bolted on to the hallway simulator that Remake was. That and the quests in the open world don’t feel substantial or consequential. Find this Spring, fight this legendary enemy, rinse and repeat. The campiness of the story is also getting to me.

For full disclosure, I didn’t play the original on PSX but was always intrigued by the art style and aesthetic back when it released. Alas, I only had a N64 at the time and never played it in the later years through emulation. I’m not sure if the original has the same level of camp, but would like to hear if that’s only in these games or in the series overall. The feeling I got from various advertisements was the game was more mature in tone than I’ve experienced so far.

I did finish Remake earlier this year, after initially trying it when it launched in 2020. The campiness of it turned me off a few years back but I really wanted to understand the hype.

I guess the only thing I’m getting out of it at the moment are the visuals. It’s gorgeous, but I don’t think I’m appreciating the story/lore like all the fans are.

All you need to know is that he labeled himself as a consultant. Which reminds me of this joke.

Once upon a time there was a shepherd tending his sheep at the edge of a country road. A brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee screeches to a halt next to him.

The driver, a young man dressed in a Brioni suit, Cerrutti shoes, Ray-Ban glasses, Jovial Swiss wrist watch and a BHS tie gets out and asks the shepherd: “If I guess how many sheep you have, will you give me one of them?” The shepherd looks at the young man, then looks at the sprawling field of sheep and says: “Okay.”

The young man parks the SUV, connects his notebook and wireless modem, enters a NASA site, scans the ground using his GPS, opens a database and 60 Excel tables filled with algorithms, then prints a 150 page report on his high tech mini printer. He then turns to the shepherd and says:"You have exactly 1,586 sheep here. "

The shepherd answers: "That’s correct, you can have your sheep."The young man takes one of the animals and puts it in the back of his vehicle. The shepherd looks at him and asks: “Now, if I guess your profession, will you pay me back in kind?” The young man answers: “Sure.” The shepherd says: “You are a consultant.” “Exactly! How did you know,” asks the young man? Very simple, answers the shepherd. “First, you came here without being called. Second, you charged me a fee to tell me something I already knew. Third, you do not understand anything about my business and I’d really like to have my dog back.”

  • Once I changed my mindset to “this map of the solar system is really just like a flat plane in Fallout New Vegas, except with extra steps” then I was able to enjoy it more. I think games like No Mans Sky spoiled people in terms of an engaging space travel mechanic, even though Bethesda was honest from the beginning about there not being transitions into/out of planet atmospheres.

The opening story about joining Constellation was pretty weak though.
