Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are your preferred alternatives to Amazon?English
11·2 months agoFinding what I want on Amazon, and then looking it up and buying directly from the supplier. It’s usually cheaper too.
I’d be curious to rewrite some of the malware we made in class and see if AVs would pick it up now.
Most of them didn’t make any network calls etc. they would just mess with your files and system Things like Set background to Justin-Bieber, play Justin-Bieber randomly, we were very mature
The best security is to limit your risk vector.
Like you said Anti-viruses aren’t some magic bullet, in university a bunch of us wrote Malware and wrecked each other’s lab computers or did things like having the whole Lab’s computers CD trays open at 10am every morning.
The AV didn’t pick up any of them and we barely knew what we were doing.
Afik, AV’s mostly scan for known threats

3·2 months agoSo I have the UniFi Express 7 and a 2.5Gbps 8 port managed switch to go along with it. It’s overkill for my current needs but it allows me to expand on it a lot if I like.
It’s potentially cheaper to just buy a RackMate, or 3D print a 10" rack, but where’s the fun in that.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is it so hard to get Nvidia GPUs working with Linux?English
2·2 months agoBest you can so is test it for yourself.
I switched to Linux Mint in February and my 4070 has given me no issues.
I just had to set some configs in steam so that it defaults to using my 4070 and not my iGPU, and the rest just worked

3·3 months agoConsider using Nextcloud instead of Proton Drive.
You can host it yourself, but if you’re not up for that you can pay Hetzner to do it for you for dirt cheap
https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-share/
The issue I have with Proton is they seem really good now, but in say 10 years they could get greedy and then you have to move again.
With Nextcloud you own and control everything iit’s open source

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why does calorie counting work for weight loss and why are calories interchangeable?English
10·3 months agoWhen you inhale you breath in oxygen, your body then adds carbon to that and you exhale CO2
With every exhale you’re literally losing carbon, when you eat you add carbon back into your body.
Burning wood on the fire works the same way, wood is carbon and when burnt in a fire it gets added to Oxygen and you get CO2
A fire and your metabolism both just take carbon and “burn” it with oxygen releasing CO2
You’re basically a big bucket of carbon and water with a slow leak.
So if you eat less “carbon” in a day than you breath out, you’ll lose weight

10·4 months agoBy fidelity for an hour to try and get it right you can save 5min of reading the instructions
Ah good to hear, I loved that game
Sad to hear Hell Divers doesn’t work. Odd that they’d be so strict, it’s CoOp
I switched to Linux at the start of this year, and it’s been great, some small hiccups but nothing I couldn’t solve in a few min

Technology@beehaw.org•Australia Completely Loses The Plot, Plans To Ban Kids From Watching YouTubeEnglish
16·4 months agoI visited a friend, their 4 year old was watching YouTube on a tablet
At some point I sat next to him to see what he was watching, It was a cartoon where the one character looks evil and has long claws, catches another, stabs it with its long claws, cuts its head off, holds its corpse about it and drinks litres of blood gushing out. Then gains an aura, pupils dilate and sprouts wings and flies into the sky to attack more creatures.
This wasn’t some Anime, it’s a kids cartoon made for very young kids.
I started watching happy tree friends etc. when I was like 13, but what the fuck this is next level.

Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve gotten to that point.
They’d claim it’s AI generated and move on to ‘more important thigns’ like the money wasted on foodstamps
