  • If you’re romantically interested in someone, say “hey, I’m romantically interested in you”.

Do not have a “crush”, do not have a friend you’re secretly in love with, do not secretly pine for anyone. It is not interesting, it does not make you stronger, you are not the protagonist in a romance novel, and you are dumb if you want to try to “save our friendship”.

If the other person is not interested, say “Thank you for your honesty. It’s been nice knowing you” and move on with your life. Stop wasting time. Life is too short.

Say what you mean and mean what you say. Don’t waste precious time on imaginary scenarios.

  • It’s completely possible to perform all the mechanical functions of sex without feeling any pleasure or any emotions about it. Heck, I think I may have done that at some point in my life as a real human.

Data wants to be more human, but because he doesn’t have the capacity to feel emotion (without his emotion chip) he can certainly perform the activity, just not experience the emotion and pleasure.

Edit: the Borg Queen gives Data skin so he can feel physical pleasure in the Star Trek: First Contact movie. You should totally watch it if Data feeling pleasure intrigues you…

  • If/when we actually achieve Artificial Intelligence, then maybe it would be a concern.

What we have today are LLMs which are big dumb parrots that just say things back to you that match a pattern. There is no actual intelligence.

Calling our current LLMs “Artificial Intelligence” is just marketing. LLMs have been possible for a while but until recently we just didn’t have the processing power at the scale we have now.

Once everyone realizes they’ve been falling for a marketing campaign and that we’re not very much closer to AI than we were before LLMs blew up, then LLMs will just become what they actually are: a tool that enhances human intelligence.

I could be wrong though. If so, I, for one, welcome our new AI overlords.

  • Fair enough. In the Elon one there are probably some people that would want to hear more. It was hard for me to come up with an example.

We shouldn’t downvote the unpopular opinion, we should upvote it. It’s counterintuitive but we’re actually asking for unpopular opinions. I see a lot of truly interesting unpopular opinions in here that are getting downvoted and I’m not sure everyone is on the same page.

The “unpopular opinions” that should be downvoted are the opinions that aren’t really unpopular opinions and are just trolling. You know them when you see them.

  • What are the “unpopular opinion” rules on Lemmy?

My original understanding from outside Lemmy is you should upvote the truly interesting unpopular opinions for visibility.

    For example:

    • “I think potato chips are gross” - that is an unpopular opinion and I am truly interested in why you would say that…upvote.
    • “Elon Musk makes some good points” - not interesting at all and probably political bullshit trolling…no upvote and a downvote if enabled.

  • Is it good? Like does it actually taste like steak? Economical to produce? Is it better for the economy and the environment, Hell yes, then.

Imagine a perfectly marbled, perfectly rectangular, gristle free Wagyu quality steak that you could sear in some butter in a cast iron and serve right up.

No animal had to be raised and slaughtered. Less drain on resources. Less land usage.

I’m not convinced that the technology will ever get there, but what do I know. I’m just some dude on the internet.

  • Three things:

    1. Don’t stop until you find the right mask. There are a lot of options.
    2. Change is always awkward at first. It will take time to get used to.
    3. Adjust your attitude. Most people are already convinced that they’re not going to like a CPAP and are angry they have to wear one. Make the effort to be healthy. Eating healthy and getting exercise aren’t fun for most people either. Getting quality sleep is just as important.
