  • I refuse to engage with other people’s holiday shit until I have visual confirmation of Hans Grueber falling from the Nakatomi Plaza building.

That one started when I was like 10 and usually happens within a week of thanksgiving. I try to avoid other Xmas stuff whenever I can. It’s a rough holiday (season) for me, kinda always has been even as a kid, and I don’t have anyone to spend it with anyway.

  • I had something similar to this for the original fat gameboy in the 90s, except instead of being a rechargeable battery, which weren’t really worth it then, it was a plug-in adapter, and it replaced the battery cover panel to do so.

I genuinely don’t understand why that sort of thing doesn’t exist anymore, either as plug adapters or as rechargeable bricks (or both, why not), so you can fall back on standard AA or AAA if necessary. They’d be standardized parts so manufacturers would only get the original sale but… so? Would it not also be just easier from a manufacturer standpoint?

  • When I swapped to powder it was because I could buy a jug of All free and clear (cheapest brand for hypoallergenic that I could find) for $12. I don’t recall how many loads it did, but I could get the powder online, which was at least the same number of loads but probably way more, same brand same fragrance free formula, for $4.75. They don’t carry the powder in most stores around me, I assume because it’s so much cheaper nobody would buy the overpriced liquid. Same with cheap dish powder; just not available.

  • Do you have any links to these, or names I can look for? I’m genuinely into that sort of social norm bucking, as a comfort-in-skin-over-propriety sort of gal myself, and learning stuff (mostly any science-adjacent stuff) is my special interest - my degree and life focus is in science communication (I can’t help but infodump so I learned how to do it properly!)!

I mean naked news was(is?) super popular; why not fuck-me-branded science?

  • Why would it be unlikely for us to be an end point, though? assuming an infinite chain from all spawned universes is kinda just silliness, imho.

If this is some big deal simulation (as in not common or easy, but like one simulation per universe) it would need several rounds of testing with simpler or randomized states to ensure it even works well enough for full prod. Sure those universes probably wouldn’t be maintained indefinitely, but from the inside it would be identical. There would necessarily be several of these -per chain link-. Plus if it’s for research, why wouldn’t they try simulating “impossible” universes with different physics than their own? I mean we do it, and we are nowhere near this level of complexity.

If simulation becomes trivially easy in just some of the universes, though… Everyone who plays sandboxy games plays through several really shit runs while they figure out what they are doing, before finally getting somewhere. And then half the time those runs get abandoned as well for whatever reason (like having a killer new idea, or some event happened that can’t be recovered from). I see no reason universe simulation, should it get trivially easy, would be any different. Some game which entities set up and play out, or abandon for something better… or maybe they are fucking around with mods and just testing stuff out so it doesn’t need to be complete in that way. (e.g. in rimworld a dev test map is tiny, and spawns with zero configurations, just random simplified spawning to test things, and you may need to spawn dozens of these to sort out issues.)

And if that’s the case, that for any reason there are far more end points than links in chains (like tassel fringe rather than chain), I see no reason to assume we would have physics that allow us to be a link rather than an end, since ends would be infinitely more common.

  • Thanks! I’d prefer more stable income that doesn’t kill my body for being broken, but this will do in a pinch. I can work on stuff when I’m feeling well, and nobody judges me when nothing gets done as long as I take care of my animals. And who knows maybe I’ll end up with enough surplus to sell to neighbors or something! There’s a year round farmers market near me that moves indoors over winter; surplus/preserved goods could easily be sold there or something similar.

As for Minecraft, I tried it many years ago, and granted my pc at the time could barely run it, but that super open sandbox stuff isn’t really for me; I’m not a particularly creative person in the way that game needs.

Stuff like rimworld and oxygen not included is more up my alley. Sandboxy but considerably more goal-oriented base building/exploring, with clear progression.

  • Yeah, I live in town on 0.2 acres. I’ve got a small flock of chickens, and a hydroponic garden in the works to use the entirety of my basement year round to provide most of my fresh food needs, and hopefully that of one or two people important to me, once it’s in full swing (it’s a very old house and the foundation is leaky, there’s not a lot I can do about it other than embrace it due to how it was built).

I don’t have a big yard, so the chickens have the bulk of it, and I can’t use the remainder for growing stuff because it doesn’t get direct sun, but I do better with controlled conditions like hydro anyway. I hate weeding, and the guesswork of watering dirt.

So far the garden consists of a sprout and seedling station (for eating and growing), several varieties of tomatoes and peppers that will be producing soon, some beans, peas, 2 types of mushrooms (grown on shredded cardboard), some herbs, and some asshole strawberries that hate me and refuse to grow. When I get the aquariums set up to breed guppies or minnows for my cats and turtle, (my neighbor was throwing out 3 55gallon tanks so I took them) I’ll be adding leafy greens and whatever else in an aquaponics setup.

I also keep colonies of crickets, mealworms, and a worm composter, for feeding the birds and making compost tea for nutrients.

I’m currently testing a bucket method for growing relatively large quantities of root crops in small spaces. I’ve had the idea for a while but I’m finally motivated to see if it works, and what it works for. If it does I’ll probably end up posting instructions on here somewhere. Probs slrpnk. Few months before I get results, or don’t, on the first round.

I wanted to sell this place and buy 40 acres with a shitty house, build up a real hobby farm/homestead, but everything started getting uncertain right around when I started looking, and I got real nervous about putting myself into a more precarious position, so I’m kinda stuck making this work for now.

  • Usually somewhere between 9 and 12 hrs (disabled and not working for someone else, but have a micro farm to maintain)… it feels like such a massive waste of time because it’s never enough to feel rested. I used to go with the 4-8 hr thing and that was worse but the anxiety early in the morning really kept the energy up. And then led to panic attacks as an alarm clock. Woo was that fun for 3 solid years.

I don’t think any amount of sleep is enough, really (since childhood I’ve always tended to sleep a lot when my brain finally slows down enough), but I do know too little is super super bad for me.

I used to do it for SETI@home (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) and a few other projects. Haven’t in a while now but maybe I will again since my server pc never shuts off anyway.

Back in the day I used boinc or some such to interface, it sort of looked like a torrent page, with progress bars on the tasks and stuff. It was kinda neat having an impact.

I wanted to listen to it, so I went looking.

And I am wildly disappointed that the only human-read video I could find is a freakin’ ASMR video. I can’t watch that shit.

The computer-read versions make it sound like it would make a great tongue twister memory sort of thing. I’m honestly a tiny bit surprised it hasn’t been done.

  • If you take each medium in isolation, no you can’t reach those numbers.

But for a whole day across all the various ways advertisers have found to shove shit in our faces? I just think you might be under-estimating how many ads are out there, or maybe not considering all the things that count as ads, especially in meatspace, and how little most people actually do to avoid them, if they can even be avoided.

Like that 30 seconds for every 2 minutes of music is often while driving and seeing billboards and vehicle advertisements and stuff as well.

  • Boy idk, with my pihole I can see all the places where ads are supposed to be on articles and stuff and there are a freakin ton of breaks and funky formatting.

That’s not including highlighted word ads, video ads at the top and sides of the screen (especially the ones that follow you) and sponsored results in every search (Google, Amazon, etc.). The top result bar of the main used search engine, Google, shows you an entire scrollable row of related product ads, followed by another block of ad links after. When you buy things online, there’s often a pop up about related products or things you might like before you check out, which is 6-12 more ads. That’s not including the multiple ads that may already be present on each product page.

I can’t comment on social media sites in depth, but there they likely have static ads in addition to volumes of sponsored posts, plus a solid chunk of the “content” is also advertising.

Does this include real life and not just the internet? Radio ads, gas pump ads, billboards, ticker messages and printing on vehicles are all ads as well. Oh, and all the clothing with logos.

I absolutely believe 4,000-10,000 for an average person without blockers who uses normal sites. Video ads probably make up a relatively small proportion but ads are -everywhere-.
